FYI: outdoors there is no "12/12"

Just wanted to post this as I see many people telling noobs that " your plants will flower outdoors once you start getting 12/12 light cycle" or something to this affect. This has been said a million times before but repitition is a proven method of learning.Outdoors your plants will start flowering once they notice diminishing light hours. Last yr my plants started showing flowers 2nd-3rd week of August which, if I recall correctly, was more like 14/10, and they finished mid Oct. which was about 11/13. Wanted to get this out there, again, hopefully it will help at least one person understand a little more. I can just see some poor noob who got bad info waiting for 12/12 outdoors before switching to flower nutes, and by then his plants are almost done...

at 12/12 is the fall equinox ? sept 21 ish? yeah well thats what you get for being a nub and not knowing what you are doing.. or someone giving you false info.. also read your areas hours of daylight and darkness for the most accurate info.

also grab a Farmers Almanac, it will have lots of good info for you, sun rise/set with hrs of sun in a day,Avg. frost dates,etc.

thats why i have always said that 14 hours or more of dark will flower.. it does not need to be exactly 12/12. they will flower under 10 on and 14 off. 10 on and 16 off 8 on and 16 off.

different strains will flower at different points. some might not start till 13/11 and some will at 15/9 and some may prefer 11/13. its strain dependent and the most common is 12/12 because it will work with all strains and is very effective. but i actually keep my flower room at 11.5/12.5.

While I agree with your posts title, I disagree with the quote above because I put some plants out in December (I live where it warm) and they're flowering now even though the amount of light they get outside is actually increasing.

I find this interesting. Maybe the spectum of light along with "less than X hours of light" triggers it?I'm still learning as well and maybe I was over generalizing with my statement.How long have they been flowering? Have you grown before? Is there a possibility of the plant going back to veg, or possibly taking longer to flower with the increased light hours?

Its just some bad seed I have been saving so I don't know what strains they are. One does appear to be and indica and the other appear to be sativas (judging by the shape of their leaves). They have been flowering for quite some time now, I didn't take notice when they started If I had to say, I'd say six weeks. This is my first time growing. I don't believe they will go back to flowering because I bring them in at night.

i was simply speaking of light cycles and flowering stages. i added what i set my flower at. why is that a big deal?

i agree with this, some strains wont flower untill it gets 12 dark hours.Some strains flower straight after summer solstice.

thats because flowering was triggered when you put them out under short days, dont worry they will veg soon enough.

Yeah man they have a crazy grow season. As a veggie grower, I am continually amazed at all the GIANT vegetables that come out of Alaska. (world records abound. Outdoors would be possible I imagine, though they have such a short grow season, you'd need some early flowering strains. Or have a heated cover maybe? Idk. U should check out the giants on google though!:peace:
