Germanated seeds?

I'm on my 2nd grow and have a couple seeds which i'm not sure if they're germanated?

They're showing a crack along the seem but no taproot is appearing (one of them has one slightly showing)

I've had them in a paper towel / seal lock bag for 2 days in a room ~25C and this is the first i've checked.

The only other time i grew, the tails were 1-2cm long after 2 days.

Are these ready to plant? Or should i keep them in the paper towel a day or 2 longer?

I find a small tubs better than a bag idk why people insist on using a baggy tbh i find nothing wrong with paper towels long as your on it and dont leave em too long ive never had a issue the only thing i would pop in soil would be old seeds or landrace type stuff each to there own find what works for you and run with it i guess

the only seeds i pop in the medium are my own crosses because i know theyre at 100% germ rate but with seedbank stuff duds happen and i dont want to wait for 2 weeks to be sure if i should pop another one. with paper towels you’ll know for sure in 2-3 days.

Agree, I grow more than cannabis fruits and veggies I start everything in medium but cannabis for that reason. Even tho it's a 99% germ rate, still saves time those few instances they dont pop. Especially working with older seeds...

Some seeds sprout slower, I like to see them start before I put in a cube. The one is showing a tail I would plant it.

i honestly dont know how i can get 100% germ rate from my own crosses made 4-5 years ago and stuff from seedbanks has duds. they must be storing their shit in abysmal conditions for that to happen.

Ive popped some pretty old seeds no problem so yeah something gotta be happening somewhere along the line

Just an update to say that they've broken through the soil after a few days

One of them still has her helmet on (not sure if i should be worried at this point?)

The other has its leaves out but only grew 1 of its first fan leaves instead of 2, i think it looks healthy otherwise?

Next time mist a little water on that cap. ( seed casing ) thatll soften it up then use tweezers or a fingernail to gently remove. Dont pull up plants roots are shallow now. That happens when you dont plant the seed far enough. Looks good now bud

I've got 20 year old seeds from my mums crops that sit in a clear snap on a shelf that gets sunlight here and there. Even they don't have issues popping.

The latest seeds I popped have been sitting open In a shot glass copping light and moisture on my bedside table for like three years and all three popped within 24 hours so I can't imagine what they do with them.

However I've never had a seed from a bank fail to sprout either. Some people just hit the jackpot. I do the oldschool "put in medium, brush the dirt off them in 24-36 hours and check if they have popped" method with no issues. I swear people think that towels are the only way you can see if a seed has germed.

When I have seeds I know are old, and I want them to have as much chance of sprouting as I can give them, I mix up some Humic Acid and Kelp and presoak the seeds in it.
The problem with old seeds is they lose enzymatic activity.
The seed just sort of stalls out.
I use the Virginia 5-2 mixture at a very weak strength.
(If you don't know what the Virginia 5-2 ratio is, it pays to look it up, especially if you are a soil grower)

Unfortunately, sprout survival is a selectable trait, yet it is not something breeders select for.

Besides enzymatic activity which declines with age, seeds have a waxy coating that turns to a shellac consistency, and won't allow water to penetrate the seed coating in some instances.

These problems are the primary reason I switched to always using the paper towel method, and scarifying the seeds before soaking.
I use a very sharp penknife to lightly scratch along the seam of the seed, to help penetrate the waxy coating. After seeds sink in the soak, I place them in paper towel in a ziploc bag and hang the bag from a tack, so the taproot grows straight down.
This way, the seeds sprout at once, with no lingering sprouts.
I get maximum sprout numbers.
And the seed hulls come off easily in the paper towel, so no fumbling with my big booger pickers to take little tiny seed hulls off fragile new leaves.
