Getting the balcony ready

Hi everyone,
I´m going to start my second "garden" in my balcony (white diesel haze). The first time I did this I had 2 Hindu Kush and they got spiders after the first week. After treating them, I´ve made some research and realized that it was pretty common to happen if they were placed near the window handles and the structure that allows the window to run (I don´t know the technical name in english.)
Is there any good advice you can give in order to prepare my balcony in order to avoid this kind of episode again?

spider or spider mites? actual spiders are mostly carnivorous and no threat to a plant. they actually eat other bugs so during veg might as well take advantage of the free pest control. of course - if the plant is doing OK I mean. if you see the plant getting eaten or dying then yea...

neem oil is a good pest controller - you mix with water in a spray bottle (read the label for ratio) and add a drop or so of dish soap. mix it up and spray spray spray.....
