Wow great idea , never thought about it , on the way to get some malibu compost & will get that 45 bags as well ( 2)
damn rubbermaid totes are a PIA
they breakdown & the handles snap
so u screen the worms out when u harvest the EWC ? I was doing the bait the new bin & let them move up

another thing is the next time we get a rainstorm, put out a tarp on the ground the night before, and then after it rains, pull that tarp and under it will be mass amounts of the native earthworms
the natives in CA are reaaaaally awesome to use for aeration, as they tunnel up and down non-stop, way different than redworms do, they create little "gopher" piles of castings on the top of the soil and out the bottom aeration holes
but native earthworms are a damn good addition to the soil, and we are lucky in that ours tends to do just fine over the yrs
or at least the ones native to the central CA coast

I used to screen em, but not anymore, the worms procreate so damn fast
I made a thread a couple yrs ago regarding the screen I made for em
let me see if I can dig it up somewhere..
 
Yeah anytime I see a local they go in the bin , the red wigglers seem to stay at the bottom of my totes
but I see more local than reds these days in the bin & the locals R dominating the new stuff i toss in

it's a lil ghetto, but it works REALLY good
as long as the castings aren't too wet
 
I got various screens all ready made for doing charcoal , Whole foods cowboy charcoal best u can buy
that bio char from builda soil is poor quality (very soft) & expensive shipping & it's from beetle infested fir & cedar downed trees
WF is 100% hardwood da best

yup, the exact one I got too
bag is like 6 to 7 bucks and then ya gotta just bust it up
I used a cardboard box, with a weight plate at the bottom(Olympic 25 lber) and another 10 lb plate, and then crush, crush, crush your way to shapely hips and thighs

I screen the ashes from my fireplace in the winter and find bio char that is easy to crumble. I have one of those metal buckets with a lid for hot coals that seems to put out the embers well.

I was thinking about building a urine catch for my rabbits because I was thinking about bringing them into my garage during the winter. With all of the HPS lights, it stays warm in there lol... Anyways, I could have the urine catch full of bio char and it would probably keep the odor down and charge it at the same time. Plus, it will keep it off of the floor!

plastic cement mix tray/tub from HD & a old rug to cover & I take a splitting Mual to it using the flat end ,the rug keeps it all in the tub
the fines are great as well

i got sum char charging with a kelp extract I make with enzymes & LAB

that's a damn good idea man, not a bad idea at all
in theory you could also "renew" that biochar too by soaking it and making a urine tea
Mmmmmm urine tea...

Absolutely great idea! I imagine it will work out perfectly, provided the urine will get down there? Wouldn't it get soaked up in their bedding first?

i pre-charge with urine , figured that a added kelp extract soo i'd get sum slow release kelp goodness
I;ve seen the effects of using non charge char , mutants start to appear in my regular garden when I didn't charge

Fabs are great if huge like 20gal would be nice or double that n you're laughing

These 25gallon strong totes are strong enuf that a brotha could stand on em

At about 12 a piece they last for years too

Stackable, so u can make leaf compost inside under your worms farms, one can alsoimage.jpg have a bunny farm top of that which can grow food on top of that!image.jpg

Moving away from plastic stays too wet 4 me ,as mine are outside ,mild winters here & I gotta keep the dogs away they'd love a dig in worm bin, the blue Rubbermaid totes pia imo I was the multiple tote move up system

Well, you could always line a wire kennel with a bunch of smart fabric! Just need felt by the roll.. Then it could breathe all day while the puppies get caged out, (vs being in the kennel, they locked out of it, lol)
 
Got sum 45gal smart pots & I have liner to keep off ground & I'd tarp em anyway to keep rain off
Up against the house in any case & outta sun
