OAKLAND - Oakland is a city on high alert. Police are now working 12 hour shifts after finishing up, what was described as, crowd control training. The Port of Oakland has been turned into a staging area for mass deployments. And, in recent days the city has spent countless hours removing dozens of graffiti messages; including one that read: "LA better get it right or else."
"We are expecting god to do a miracle in this city," Oakland church leaders are trying the head off the unrest with prayer. A large crowd gathered in front of City Hall Monday night. "We believe god will intervene and cause us to have peace with the verdict, with the Oscar Grant case. God's going to bless our city not to burn," says Bishop Bob Jackson of Actsfull Gospel Church.
But the rest of Oakland is bracing for the worst. The sounds of saws, power screwdrivers and hammers can be heard up and down International Boulevard. For 30 blocks merchants are boarding up store fronts; from Fruitvale where the crime happened; to the City Center, the site of previous violence. "Do you think this is going to stop anyone?" FOX 40's John Lobertini asked. But Sam Qutob couldn't hide his true feelings, "No, no, it's not gonna stop them. They're gonna burn it, god knows what will happen," he says.
Jurors have three choices: second degree murder, manslaughter or involuntary manslaughter; the judge took away murder as an option. For young blacks in Oakland, a guilty verdict is the only justice. "I believe he was a racist, and he was sneaky about the way he killed Oscar Grant," says 20 year old Bartholomew Mustafa. 24 year old Monique Holloway wasn't any more understanding, "Guilty! Point blank: he's guilty!" Bernard Williams, however, took a more philosophical tone, "Only god knows what the real sentence should be." ..........
