Harvesting timing. Hairs are all still white, but trichomes are starting amber

Hello!

I have multiple strains and all seems to be at different stages. All are about done with week 7 of flower. My blue berry and orange have most of the hairs turned yellow/red, but the trichomes are still clear/white and a few ambers.

I'm planning to harvest the top layer this weekend and give the smaller less developed lower branches some more time. My question is mainly for my pineapple express. It has barely any hairs that aren't white and still appear to be alive. Maybe 5% have turned orange. The trichomes, however, have pretty much all turned milky and maybe 5% of them are starting to go amber. I've read quite a bit about harvest timing. It seems like everything is happening too fast. I don't recall reading anywhere that people's trichomes start turning amber until the majority of the hairs start to turn orange/red.

Any input is appreciated!

i like to chop them down when they are at abput 20% amber and 80% cloudy but its all up to u sounds like u probably have like a week or so left

heres a good rule of thumb... when u have to second guess urself on whether they're done on not, wait a week

let them all go 8-9....if it was a 7 week plant then it would look done at 5-6

All depends on the affect you want the meds to have .. If you think they are done to the desired affects you want then harvest em... I like couchlock.. so I go for the deep amber ,, want speed .. go with the milky white

Thanks for the responses. I do understand the theory behind harvest timing (trichome development) vs desired affects.

I guess I was really wondering if it's normal to have all the hairs still vibrantly growing and some of the trichomes already going amber.

I haven't started my flush yet like I had intended so I probably will go ahead and go straight water at this point and wait until after next week to start harvesting the top of the ladies.

My sativas did the same thing the hairs turned color during curing you will be fine just watch those trichs the more milky the more up your high is.

amber trichs do show up in different places at different times
are these the trichs from the bud or bud leaf? the bud leaf trichs will amber first, and may cause some confusion

Good call. I was looking on the leaves close to the bud. I didn't realize there was a difference.

I had planned on one more feeding so I may just go ahead and do that. Im still torn on the whole flushing idea. I get the theory, but I can also think of why it's not needed. It's not like I flush any of my plants from my veggie garden and I grow some of the best veggies in the neighborhood.

While the pistils of most strains will change color and recede by the time a plant is ripe that is not always the case. Some strains will still have all white or mostly white pistils when fully ripe. Matanuska Tundra is an example of a strain where most to all pistils will still be fully white and not receding when the plants are fully ripe.

When it comes to when to harvest, place more stock in trichome color than pistil color.


CANNABINOL (CBN)




Cannabinol is the primary degradation product of THC and increases in concentration with plant age. The concentration of this product in the bud is heavily dependent on the time of harvest. Harvesting the bud at a late stage also means that the concentration of CBN in relation to THC will be higher when compared to the peak of THC production. It is only mildly psychoactive and can cause "fuzzy head", drowsiness, disorientation and sleepiness in the smoker, properties that can be considered unpleasant in nature compared to the clear high of the THC.










But by all means, decide when to harvest based on what you are the most comfortable with.

Trichs don't lie, the hairs do. I've seen hairs on some strains that never turn orange. I also see hairs that turn orange when half the trichs are still clear.

Just watch the hairs... trich's mature all the time and new ones are produced.
