i would say min 3 gallon pots. ive been vegging clones for 3 weeks straight to flower for some time now. the rule of thumb which i use is 1 gallon of soil for each month of plant life. So, 3 week veg, 8-9 week flower= 12 weeks, or three months and 3 gallons of soil. used all diferent size pots but 3 gallons seems to be the most reliable and best yeilding. Now this soil you want to create wil be from scratch>? i mean you havent put together yet, and you want to plant into them when?? just gotta make sure you cook soil for 30 days before planting anything in it.
heres what i use.
4 cups/cf:mix of Kelp, Aflafa, Fish bone meal, neam seed meal, crab shell.
3-4 cups /cf minerals: Azomite, Rock phospate, gypsum, oyster shell(ground and flour) humic acid ore
1 cup/cf bio tone. 4 cups/cf fresh composts manure. 1 cup/cf carbs (rice, oatmeal, flour ec)
I than topdress with a substantial amount of EWC. mycos are transplant of course.
my base is 1/3 each peat, perlite, and ewc.

I also would suggest looking into oyster for buffering instead of any lime.
crab shell for chiton and pest resistance.

what is you base soil going to consist of?
also i have been led away from slaughterhouse products and am loving it (blood, bone, feather meals).
@greasemonkeymann may have the technical reason why. dangerous to your health for sure. and antibiotics and hormones are almost always used in all of these industries. yuck.

Most improtantly.... just make sure you cook any soil with raw ammendments minimun 3-4 weeks. so if your just now building soil your clones may well be month and half old before you can plant.

if you dont have time to let the soil cook for 30 days (which is highly recommended if you're planning on using the amendments you have), i'd just build a proper soil, without any of your amendments and make teas or pick up the vegamatrix nute line to finish them out. im currently doing that exact thing while my amended soil is "cooking".

this is my exact mix for what i'm running the next 12 plants through...
equal parts: compost (ewc or any high quality compost), sphagnum peat moss, and aeration (pumice, crushed lava rock, rice hulls, perlite will work but as i understand it is not preferred. i dont like it cause it floats away lol.

to that i added 3 cups total of various rock dusts (cascade minerals, CBD minerals, azomite, greensand) per cubic ft.; 1/2cup oyster shell flour per cubic foot; and 1/4cup powdered gypsum per cubic foot.

that's it! i watered in compost tea when i transplanted into the mix, and i will be feeding vegamatrix line to them, plus aloe vera, coconut water, and probably another microbe tea when they go into flower.

my personal opinion but take it with a grain of salt...i would stay away from the vege tone, blood and bone meals, and guanos. there are better alternatives to those products, they can be harmful to your health if mishandled.

you can make teas with your amendments instead of putting them right in your soil.

always wear a dust mask when making soil!

I have a soil mix already mix up that's been cooking for a month in a half didn't think it would be safe for small clones to head right to flower and didn't wanna throw them in that mix and they get burned been using the mix for 12 inch plants with no problems but these clone are only 6 in

i dont see why they would burn... but if you are worried... i mean just make a mix equal parts aeration, compost, and peat. you can't go wrong. they need so little when they are small like that.

this thread is full of some very good advice!
An easy way to check to see if your soil is too "hot" is to plant another garden plant in it and observe. Within three days or maybe five at the most, you'll see either the plant take off, or not.
another easy way to make sure is to cut that mix 50/50 with pro mix or something like that.
Usually too "hot" really means not aged enough, but "hot" is a generic term, I've even heard growers use that to describe acidity (albeit incorrectly)
In my world, too "hot" is referring to nitrogen, more specifically the readily available kind, like urea. Or in some cases the water soluble kind, guanos, blood meal (kinda), fish emulsion, squid emulsion, those types of things.
In my experience, I've never, ever, ever, burned a plant from organics, BUT I am a notoriously light feeder, I mean I did "water onlys" for bagged soils on numerous occasions.
The key to it all, is to mix all your nutrients in with your compost, and let in age. It's not hard.
Make two batches of soil, one that's aging and the one you are using. After harvest plant legumes to live and die through the winter, they compost, and by the time your compost is ready, you add in with your old soil, repeat as needed.
Make an amended leaf compost every autumn. And by early spring if you did it right your compost is done.
It's actually pretty damn cool, the seasons tell me when to add more leaf compost.
I've done three runs without amending, and haven't seen problems.
Other than soil compacting.
SO three runs happens to be the approx. time between reamending.

I've been seeing guys go with straight fox fa
roots don't like transparent containers man, they get "light pruned"
yeah I know but I like to keep track of the roots when my clones are fresh out of cloner thanks for the info went ahead and got ffof and did the bottom of the pot with my soil mix and the top have with ffof it seemed like the way to go will see what happens thanks

You can keep track of em while still keeping em out of light. And its recommended to cut ffof with 1\3parts per light

Why would you think these items are less than acceptable? Are you Vegan? They work, and work well, when as anything, they are used properly.

no i am not vegan. i just have standards that i uphold to my garden. i dont need to risk inhaling guanos and blood and bone meals, and worry about having to keep my hands washed every time i touch something, or mix soil, or whatever. there are clean ways to achieve the same results as using those blood and bone meals, and guanos. the guano mining messes with the bats habitat. no need for this. things like fossilized bird guano are what caused the potato blight in europe. like i said, just my opinion. people use this stuff all the time and like you said when used properly they're alright. but i just like knowing that stuff isn't in my mix, that's all

and the espoma stuff... look at the cost of it... there's no way that stuff is clean. i know it says organic. just like my fox farm and age old said too... so yeah. just my opinion again.
