its a very simple little test, and one you can do over time. Use your hps and when you think you have had the best out of it get a new one but keep the old one. Now you have 2hps...one new one not so new....set up 2grows...... But keeping the light only for that plant..2grow rooms...simple test..but you will be back telling me the new bulb is better....... I say thankyou and grow well an chow for now...................... Ps its not so easy being unlucky ;-)

i have been replacing them ounce a year. i have a perpetual grow, so, like 5 harvests. i know a fellow, who buys the cheap olla 15. ones, and simply replaces every crop. i recently went from a 600, to a 1000. when i used the 600, i loved the sunmaster bulb. its what id have now, but i got a deal on my first hortilux eye. when its done, ill go back to the sunmaster. i have yet to see a bulb more visably "orange" to the eye. its gorgeous. and i think the plants are supposed to like this spectrum the best. ??

Mine crapped out after one and a half grows on 12/12...so what like 3-4 months maybe...not continuous use either...
But eff it! I never liked running HPS anyway

A bulb will only last 1 day if you get stoned and drop the S.O.B. Like I said, "So guys, what is the least % do you want to grow with?"
I think the question was adequately answered based upon the response. In addition, after 3 harvests people will often upgrade whether indica or sativa and you can use the 3-harvest bulb as a side light and build up your heat, er, amount of light. I'll probably upgrade to 1,000 watt bulbs at some time and be creative with the LK600's and the bulbs. Probably should have started with 1,000 watt bulbs and saved $$$ in the long run. No need to get testy about a post. Being helpful is where it's at. The semantics will get sorted out.
Peace

3grows and get new bulbs...simple as that....keeping them years.....he he lmfao........... so dam funny ;-)
My hortilux super hps has gone pretty strong for over 2 years now, I'm thinking a little over 2000 hours when life of the bulb is 10000 . Waste of money.

actually I was just looking at the hortilux lifespan and its 24k hours, right I'm gonna spend 140 bux to replace a lamp that has 1/5th use on it. 10k hours and still running strong. maybe you should think about buying better bulbs.

If you really want to know - start with a new bulb and measure output the same way the last week of every grow and keep a record. Eventually you'll see that your 600 is down to 500 of output and then 400. I haven't done that myself, I use a good 100 dollar bulb, assume it is worth $25 per grow to know I have fresh light, and replace after 4 grows. I'll bet I could get 6 or 8 grows, but it's worth $25 a grow as standard overhead to not have to wring my hands over this.

It's not just about cost of the bulb, how do you dispose of your bulb? do you take them to some hazardous waste site or just toss them in the trash and they end up broken in some landfill? what happens if everyone everywhere uses everything to 1/4 of its life then tosses it? Probably be more of a polluted up world than it is right now eh?
