Hydroponics

All right! Hydroponics is what I know, and hydroponics is the way I grow! :bigjoint:

This forum will be great, we can discuss anything hydro. No dirtbags here, We haul water!

We can compare the different nutrient salts, and all of the additives. Plus the kinds of soilless media and what irrigation system is best for each. And of course, pH and TDS measuring equipment, feeding and flushing, etc.

And all the while, we'll make fun of those guys hauling big bags of dirt! :blsmoke:

I can't think of any questions right now, what do YOU want to know?

I have been using dirt for a few years now but I've been kinda feeding them like a hydro way...mix the nutes in a barrel and then pump it to the plants...but I'm tired of dirt...to damn messy...so I'm ordering my hydro supplies and I hope I ordered right...then hopefully the seeds that I kept in the frig are still good or I will have to try and order from attitude seed bank. Oi Vey

Hasn't been a post in this hydro sub forum in almost a year, so I figured i would rejuvenate20240819_075012.jpg20240819_075014.jpg20240819_075017.jpg it a little with some action.
My 52 day grow in 4 13 gallon buckets with a 13 gallon reservoir outside the tent.

After some intense defoliation last night the air flow looks a whole lot better in the tent. Hairs popping up at bud sites but no buds yet on this 13th day since I flipped the lights to 12/12. Hopefully within a week or so we will have some (lots) of buds to look at. I am actually hoping the bud diameters stay smaller and hopefully help me avoid bud rot or mildew. 20240820_061230.jpg20240820_061233.jpg

Apologies if this has been covered.

I'm looking at moving to a hydro setup of some kind due to a losing battle with gnats.

@driver77 recommended the Aircube system. It looks really nice;

I'm also considering the Vivosun DWC bucket system;

Those of you that are doing hydro, how do you start seeds? Do you start them in the buckets with peat plugs or rockwool cubes? Or, do you start them in in a tray with peat plugs are seed starting soil?

I'm trying not to use anything with organic material that could cause another infestation.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

I've used rockwool, jiffy plugs(peat),and this last time soil. I just started them in solos and transplanted to hydroton. It all works...pick one that your good with and go with it.
I've put them in hydroton as early as a few days to a few weeks.....all worked....although I do think the earlier the better for maximum growth early.
Spider Farmer has some new inexpensive systems out too....Aircube wasn't cheap.

I dont think anybody should BUY a hydroponics system, there is one big thing about growing is to keep it one the LOW :) now why would you go an buy a system, maybe the cops keep an eye on that place...or maybe he keeps a list ? even if you pay with cash...do you think he has a pen handy to write down your plate number? hmm i love the hardware store, plus you look prof. buying there too :) the ladies like a man who is a proffesional :) just build your own stuff if u smoke weed you have an imagination
cali supersoil can score 8-10k pounds anyway why would u worry about the hydro shop with the guy that keeps a list

Hello grow community!

I have some question to you whose more experienced than me.

I’ve been growing seedlings in jiffy and then planted ’em to rockwool cubes. Soon as I planted them the algae started to grow on ’em and now the cubes smell kinda moldy…

The question is that is it safe to put those to NFT setup or do I have to plant them in the soil?

The smell reminds me of bacteria or fungi and I consider that are those bacterias and fungis welcome to NFT/hydroponics setup?

What should I do? Can you help me out and help me to solve this dilemma..?

If ima go and try to solve the problem with hydrogen peroxide? Do I have to wait till the bacteria or fungi is defeated and then transplant em to NFT or can I transplant em and then fight the bacteria/fungi?

I consider the planting to soil because soil has all kinds of microorgans and I thought it wouldn’t matter in soil am I wrong?

TLDR: Transplanted Jiffys to rockwool amd they started to grow algae… So can I transplant ’em moldy smelling things to NFT or do I need to fight the problem and then transplant ’em? Or maybe better solution is to transplant ’em to soil?

Please grow bros solve this for me and help me out!!??

Thank you for the answers and giving time and solution to my problem…

I use Rapid Rooters in a grow dome and I've had excellent results with that approach.

My preference would be for RDWC, as is the GrowAce, but not with only a 5 gallon bucket for the plants.

RE. the GrowAce - no hands on experience and, after a quick review, the 5 gallons pots are a non-starter for me. I've been growing in a 2' x 4' tent with a res res that holds 28 gallons of nutrient solution and there are a lot of advantages to having a large volume of nutrient solution. It takes some time to swap a res but I only swap a res three or four times over the course of a 110 day grow.

A 5 gallon res hold, at most, 4 gallons and, as the plant grows and grows more roots, that 4 gallons will drop even more. That's OK in seedling and in veg but, as the plant matures, it will start taking up a lot of water, say a gallon per day. If you've got 4 buckets and have to refill them every day, as well as adjust pH and EC, that's a fair amount of work. Going to an RDWC system, where you adjust pH and EC in just the external res, you're only adjusting water in the res and, because there's a large mass of water, pH and EC will tend to be more stable.

One issue to watch out for in inexpensive RWDC systems is that the return line is very small, say 1", and will tend to clog with roots. The PA Hydro and Current systems use s 2" (or 3") return line to avoid that issue. To my way of thinking, I would not look to save $$ on this part of the grow setup. There are lots of vendors of small bucket systems and they're all very similar. When you move to an RDWC system, they're more expensive because they're systems that are designed rather than pieces that are put together as a "kit".
ve to a larger res, plant size increases dramatically.

I'd go with a setup from PA Hydro which uses 8 gallon or 13 gallon buckets. If you've got money to burn, Current Culture makes higher end equipment. This seller has a gizmo to give more space to roots in a 5 gallon bucket system.
