I Have an Attic, How Do I Exhaust?

Hey guys, I have been growing in my walk in closet for 2 grows, without proper ventilation... Just a fan blowing on the plants and the door to the closet being open for hot air to escape.

But I really want to make use of my attic opening on the ceiling of the closet (lucky me) because Keeping the door always open isnt really an open anymore.

so what do I do?... it just a board that I have to move to the side and I have the opening to the attic. No stairs or anything.. .

what kind of fan and where and how do I fit it?

thanks

get a fan maybe a 6 inch, get a whole saw or jig saw, drill it out in the board, get a 6 inch flang screw the flang over the hole u drilled, attatch the fan to the flang or use ducting on the flang then the fan. hope this helps.

Send a duct up there and plug in your inline fan
If its drywall just cut a 4 inch hole and a get an adapter to a 6 inch or what ever works for your grow. I say that because a big 6 inch hole is harder to patch up than a 4 inch. Downside is you move a bit less air.

Oh you have an opening anyways lol. I just took a a piece of poly and coverd it and then made a hole for my duct in a corner and stapled it to the side of the opening. So the duct didnt fall out. Make sure you tape it and double poly it.

if you vent to the attic...run the duct to the as close to the roof vent as possible, should be fine

Alright, thanks for the input ...

I took some pics

this is the attic, its just a plywood board that I can move to the side

This is the closet itself, its an old pic, with CFL clamps hanging over the plants.... but its pretty much the same setup now. If I leave the door open, the temps are fine, once closed, it goes up to 89

i would do what some in this thread suggested... cut a 4 inch hole in the ceiling and run a 4 inch ducting to the attic...there was a do it yourself charcoal filter thread somewhere on here...good luck

By the way, I dont own any powertools, or know how to cut that board... Can I take it to homedepot and have them cut a hole for me?... is a regular exhaust fan (bathroom) good enough?... or get a canfan used for grows.

im a noob when it comes to handy work ... and would like to do minimum damage to the room.

you can buy a jab saw for 5 dollars..jab saw cut plaster/dry wall .... i would get a can fan...the home depot exhaust fans are very weak

Ok, Im thinking cutting a hole in the board for the attic as seen in the picture above.

Ill add ducting to lead the air higher up to the attic, so it doesnt disrupt all the insulation up there and send it flying around.

but, Where do I add the fan?... which end of the duct?...

1) inside the closet, pushing air out to the attic,
2) in the attic, pulling air out the closet
3) other suggestions

Yo dont cut a hole. Move that board and make one out of plastic so you dont do any damage. Garbage bags will work.

ahhh i am stoned my bad... is that access plywood panel in your closet?...i thought that was just your entry into your attic in your hallway..if it is in your closet..smiley face is right..would be easier to remove that and replace with a heavy duty 3 mm garbage bag ....

Thanks guys...

yes, that opening is in my closet.

So, remove the panel

replace it with a garbage bag, and then cut a hole in the bag and send ducting through it?...

and attach a fan to the duct on either end

I just did this in my grow room. I took out the original board and bought a piece of plywood to cut the hole in to replace the original. That way I can swap the original if needed right away.

Bought a 4in. dryer vent flange screwed it in, hooked up 4in. duct tubing to my fan and sucked the air out of my 4x4 tent and blew it into the attic.

You would be better off to buy a piece of drywall and cut it to the size of the hole.
They will even do that for you at lowes if you have the numbers.
Then tell them you need a 4 or 6 inch hole cut into that.

If you use a piece of dry wall you won't have to worry about how to a fix anything like you would with plastic.
It will also help to ensure excess heat doesn't find it's way back down or the tape losing it's adhesiveness over time.
And you don't have to worry about running it to a vent in the roof because the air you will be pushing will be dry, and actually cooler then the air that will already be up there.

I did like both Cletus and Buddy G said, but with an 8" and hard duct for maximum air movement. My fan sits in the attic shute w/ no issues.
Hope the pic gives the idea..... All the best!
