Never tried dwc. I want to get the basics down first before moving to other more advanced mediums. I do eventually want to try it all though. I figure though I still have a lot to learn as it is.

Like I said in a different thread this is my last soil grow. DWC for me as well. My ordeal with soil has lasted over 5 years.

Since we are throwing in grow style suggestions.... I vote coco. Growth rates are equal to dwc and ebb n flow, but 1/2 the work.
I started in on coco 3 years ago and will never look back.

No changing or maintaining resevoirs.. just drain to waste with 15% runoff.. no build up. Hydro results

Cons: cost of coco and effort involved with disposing. If you have easy way to dispose of though, no problems.

I don't know much at all of other mediums. What do you mean about disposal because otherwise you've spiked my interests in the whole coco thing. I've heard/read a lot of people swear by coco and also pro mix

The plants age does not dictate when to transplant, that plant looks ready. Plants in small pots require a lot of know how and feeding to keep healthy.

Nice plant... but, ime, dwc does not out perform coco... or really, even peat moss for that matter. Peat moss just has a less forgiving watering schedule than coco. That's why I prefer coco over peat. This is just in my garden though. Every ones garden is different.

You can grow a big plant in any medium. Bigger roots, bigger plants. soilless roots will develop faster. DWC does not unlock some sort of plant size limitation...

In an indoor garden with good climate control the outdoor seasons have no effect on your garden. If you are lacking adequate climate control, DWC can perform poorly due to high solution temps. low solution temps, ime, was less of a problem. Coco will perform in any reasonable temp though, really.

Ed Rosenthal says 72 degrees is your optimal root zone temp..

Trueweedsmoker is on RIU too... I remember, earlier this summer all of his plants died mid grow.
He asks questions in the hydro section every so often..

Well, i do not reuse coco or peat. for pest control reasons.
So, after you cut down your plants, you gotta do something with the coco/soil/peat. In smaller gardens this isn't much of an issue.

Coco is a good medium. I would recommend it. DWC is fun too.. Coco will be a little less work.
It's hydro-like results with soil-like work load. Fuck it, try them all. haha.

Ya I'm already convinced. I personally would like to see real proof that other mediums will outperform hydro(side by side from seed) and to say it is more problematic than coco or soil? I don't know about that one and it is very easy to control the temp on a dwc just put the res outside the tent.. I grew in dirt for a long time so I'm very aware of it's limitations. Ya a long winter coming perfect to just sit in front of your girls and stare at them lol.
Btw my last grow in soil and I'll never go back.

I don't know about more problematic, but I found it to be more work.

side by side from seed is not real proof, you want side by side clones to show anything or it could just be tossed up to a pheno variation.... with that being said I run super soil now and I don't ph water I don't let it sit out I run it out of a tap into a jug and dump it on my plants unless it is winter then I let it get to room temp... doesn't get easier than that. I have done dwc, aero, soil, coco based mixes, peat based mixes, and I don't got time for bullshit. I dump water on em and they grow like beasts 2"pot to a 1 gal to a 7 gal. they loves it. go back to the op..... it still needs transplanting

Coco is really simple.. A good quality, cleaned, ready to use out of the bag coco is key. I like House and Garden and Canna.

Dyna Gro Coco grows kill it!.. You can feed at 1/4... almost every watering. For drain to waste, 15% runoff is sufficient to keep the media clean. The air/moisture retention is just fucking perfect. That is what makes it effective and simple. You can treat it like soil if you want and still get near hydro results. Try visiting a 3000 watt DWC garden just two times a week.... psh.. more like quit your day job.

Coco, Dyna Gro, Drain to waste... so fucking simple, great results.

Water gardens are fun though... THese days, I put my water gardens outside off of my fish ponds/tanks... it keeps the water clean. A 24/7 recirculating aquaponic system with a hardy fish is the least demanding (labor) water garden I have had. I like to leave that mess outside.
Ina cold climate though, heating a tank gets expensive. I just keep goldfish... they produce plenty of waste/feed and can survive year round here. Being outdoors, the aquaponics just does my leafy greens and culinary herbs. I dirt my tomatoes and peppers still, but, im working on a 300 gal system that will handle veggies soon.

Wait... am I understanding this correctly? You set up a self sustaining system for growing that uses your naturally made fish poop??? That's fuckin brilliant. I dunno why it never crossed my mind but makes perfect sense. I wonder if it could handle marijuana. ...

Yep. Aquaponics. Lots of info and videos out there. It can totally do MJ. You just gotta get the balance right. To be honest, it would not be a simple garden for mj. If I did it, i would do it outdoors with big tilapia or Pacu. Definitely cycle up the garden with lower fish number and leafy greens for a year... then add more fish and mj. Shit would get stinky indoors though. I suppose a carbon filter might help..

Some guy on RIU journaled an indoor mj aquaponic system... maybe 6 months ago...
you know, not sure why, but there has never been much interest in aquaponics around RIU. Not sure why.. I started a few threads a few times, but, they never went anywhere.. Just some "cool" "that's neat".

My aquap setups are leafy greens and herbs... low nute needs...which means i can keep lower fish stock...which means much fewer headaches.
The more nutes needed, the more difficult it will get, in general. Low nute need setups are stupid easy, effortless really.
If you wanna produce fruit you need lots of fish waste being efficiently broken down to plant food and keep the plants growing/consuming consistently.
Lots of checking Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite levels. A pond test kit covers these and more.
