Anyway, I am rethinking this whole thing til I have more scratch. Cant really do what I want with current budget and not sure the DIY is really going to equal the savings I anticipated ultimately. The excitement I initially had about the project has turned into a sort of knot in my gut comprised of indecision and frustration with myself about my own indecision. Maybe I just like the little buzz of my HPS in the wee hours of the morning, who knows.

Would anyone have a link to a solid, cob build that would replace a 400w HID? Or suggestions? I'd like to use 3070's bb bin.

Anybody using the Typhon controller for dimming with the Mean Well HGL-185c-1400B driver? I'm thinking about purchasing 2 for a 32 cob 8 bar light build that I'm in the middle of. I know, there are cheaper ways to do it but with everything invested so far I'd like a clean looking finish that even a fire marshal would approve of. Anybody?

As far as color. I keep seeing people using 4k. But my mh is 7000k. I also grow assorted veggies. Will the 4k work or should I run closer to the 7k?

If you run veggies I would go for 4000ºk because of the lack of red in 5000ºk and 6500ºk!
But I don't know if you really need some red for the kind you grow!
But I guess you have a vegg and a bloom period as well as mj...so 4000ºk imo!
Maybe you could tell me what kind of veggies! ?

dont cheap out. 3590s will pay for themselves and a larger heatsink is usable foreverWant to make 2 42" strip lights using cobs and this heatsinkwith passive cooling. Would like to use the most efficient cobs/driver I can, at a reasonable price. Im thinking maybe 5 cxb1507 or 1512s but not sure what to get. I see on the mouser site they are only available in 2700 or 3000 color. I was hoping to find 3500 or 4k as this will be used to grow edible houseplants, lettuce, tomatoes and peppers primarily. Im open to ordering from anywhere that is reputable and would really appreciate it if someone could give me a complete parts list for what I need, including cob holders (if necessary) reflectors (if necessary) etc. Id prefer to have a single driver for each strip and the environment is in my basement where temps are usually quite cool, close to 65F. I dont want to bother with fans, but there is a fan in the grow area, so there is some airflow available. I did some rough calculations and it seems that there is about 15 cubic inches of surface area per inch of this heatsink. So if it is necessary to have about 15 inches / watt of heat dissipation, you could have up to 40 watts / strip of heat, without going to active cooling? These are really rough numbers and I know some of you are much better at figuring this stuff than I am so any advice is greatly appreciated! Also Id like to wire these in series instead of parallel for safety reasons and I have thermal paste and kapton tape and basic tools already.

some people want instant gratification. im more of a "hey the efficiency upgrade of this component will pay for itself in 3-6 mos and keep on giving for a decade at a return i couldnt make in any investment" kinda guy

Won't tomatoes jalapeños pepper...grow better under an hotter spectrum?
Maybe not since it bloom in summer??
There is a veggies section you should ask there what is the best led/cob ºk for it!?!?
There's a 6500ºk who is close to 7000ºk!

Both peppers and tomatoes will always bloom and keep blooming until their death.
Lower colour temp does increase the amount the plants will bloom, but they're not picky about colour temp or photoduration.
