A friend recently said to just buy the hard type of insulation board and that way I wouldn't have to rent saws to cut wood to the size of the window which I think is actually a really good idea... However do you guys know if that type of insulation will keep in the smell / sound as well as plywood would... in terms of blocking the window with hard insulation rather than plywood?

Should work fine. Make sure to use ducting that is black on the inside so you don't have any light leaks at window.

one of the tricks that I used to do was in this window I would build a box and inside the box there would be things like curtains if it was in a room and a home, or maybe paint cans if it was in a garage or basement. and the box with then be attached to the window and the window would be left open slightly and all the ducting would come into the box which would be pushed out the window. the decorations inside the box we're nothing but deception for people walking by or who may look at the window.

What are ur guys opinions on doing it the same way I do... Cutting wood for the window frame with holes for intake and outtake but you need to cover the wood so people can't see the wood and holes for vents? I use just a tapestry that's light enough for airflow but you can't see through... u guys have any alternatives to a tapestry to put in the window to cover but also have good airflow? I would like to have a bit more airflow than the tapestry allows, especially for a new 4k grow...
