You need to spend a lot of time reading on this site before your next attempt. It will save you a lot of money. Be patient, do your research, buy a clone or two and veg them to make more clones. It's easy and saves so much! I would suggest starting with the organic section. It will teach you a lot about how plants absorb nutrients. Noobie problems are usually overfeeding and overwatering. Invest in a good soil mix like Happy Frog. Add some perlite for extra drainage....and get rid of your partner. He isn't an asset...

OP, grow a few tomato plants. Weed will respond about the same. Start small, just a few clones or seeds. Bag seeds are a good teaching tool. In SoCal the bag seeds are usually pretty good anyway.
