Wow, this thread has no place in the newbie section but I enjoyed it in some sick way nevertheless. The dark rift guy is partially correct. The Earth's magnetic poles do reverse every 12,000 years. That is scientific fact. However, it has nothing to do with space dust. It is a result of the rotation of Earth's solid iron inner core inside the molten liquid iron outer core. This rotation is what is responsible for the magnetic field of the Earth in the first place. It has a 12,000 year wobble so to speak which causes not only complete reversal but also fluctuations in strength of the magnetic field. And what's the deal with the guy who said our solar system would collide with another solar system in 2012? Cuckoo. Cosmologists have modeled the evolution of the entire Milky Way millions of years into the future. No such collision occurs any time soon.
People have been claiming the world is going to end in a few years since time began. I'm for one am more concerned about the internet. Maybe it'll be free out Californy-way. Any South Park fans here?

Nope. Sorry, but you're wrong. It's tiered internet service, and it has to do with making money, not any elitist bullshit or doomsday scenarios. The technology is here, and companies are trying to do it (comcast, verizon, etc... most major isp's that have cable that has become part of the backbone network). Granted, I think that within a few weeks of it being out, it'll have been hacked, although you'll have to get the hack through physical means, as I am sure the site/s providing it will be blocked.
You say it's in every house, etc... but in reality, even though there are hundreds of small isp's providing access, there are only a few large companies that have the truly fat pipes that crisscross the nation and go international. So if these companies want to do it and are able to find a way to make it legal without it being labeled a monopoly, the smaller companies will follow suit or die. The large companies will simply tell them to play by the new rules or refuse them access to the pipes.

I live and work where one major "backbone" of the internet is. Sprint owns the lines which are in Cheyenne,Wyoming. Small city right? Well the major highways run through here (I-25 and I-80). It's a crazy place to see. Everything is protected with high security and guards. Let me give a scenario if the lines go down for even 15 seconds...........Sprint is fined $15Million per second a line is down + whoever broke the line is terminated on the spot. Hasn't happened yet, but that is why there is extensive screening and training done to have the right people for the job. Oh, and Sprint does not have a "master plan" to take over the internet haha.

I am also in the IT industry, and trust me the internet will never be controlled by any single corporation, or even an alliance of corporations. This is nonsense. This idea has been around since dial-up days (then it would have more plausible given that ISPs were usually phone companies). Chill out people and quit acting like scared chickens when somebody tells you something kinda scary. Research this stuff objectively before you start spreading these idiotic rumors all over the internet. Everybody relax and smoke a joint or drink a beer, nothing is going to happen to the internet.

By tubes I mean wires, usually fiber optic. If your computer doesn't have access to these, how does it connect to a computer on the other side of the world? Mesh networks? I am also not of the belief that it will be controlled by a single corporation, but you can count the major players on your fingers. So I'll give you that I was incorrect in calling it a monopoly, it's more like an alliance.

Well, you guys can keep thinking that there is some big sinister plan going on in the world, while the rest of us will continue to think objectively. Regardless, we will see what happens. And as I keep saying this theory that companies will control 90% of the internet is NOTHING NEW. I have heard this in several incarnations over the years, and it has never happened before and you can bet your ass it won't happen in the future.
