Not saying you are wrong cause it works.
But its much more convenient and it seals GREAT. When you make a proper sized hole for 2 inch net cups with the net part cut off
And the neoprene inserts are too nice not to buy.

Hi I bought some homemade 2” neoprene collar like 6 years ago and I been trying to make my own.
did you drill them with the drill in reverse?
I tried it the other date and it came out nice. To make neoprene inserts for a 2” net pot you need a 2 1/8” hole saw with a small pilot bit. The ones that I have, the where made by 2” hole saw except the one on the right side was made by a 2 1/8” hole saw.
The 2” collars sinks on the net pot while the 2 1/8” sits flush with the net pot rim. just check my clones pic with blue collar for reference.
On the other note my cloner is leakproof. I use Rubbermaid Brute totes. they are very sturdy, food grade and most important they dont leak. they cost me $25. Here is the part number:
