Laff. Nobody is championing bill gates here. Dont know where you got that.

Dont like windows? Learn to use linux. You wont because its easier to close your eyes, open your wallet and jump on the snow panther. Or snow lion. Or whatever.

Youre paying for a really nice computer case, dude. And a lot of lawyers. And some nice looking ads. And to go to the "genius bar" with my mom and dad to have some turd fix your device because you refuse to learn how it works.

This is the cult of apple. Pretty machines for people who hate computers.

If were going to continue riding this see-saw lets get a change of venue.....maybe the more money than brains thread?

Jobs took mushrooms to inspire his ideas. That alone = win.
Apply has ALWAYS been ahead of IBM. Billy Gates bought out DOS for cheap, then developed Windows by copying Apple's operating system. Apple has had very tight legal controls, while IBM somehow let clones in and duplicate their hardware. This enabled Microsoft to become huge. Billy Boy Gates is no genius by any means, he was at the right place at the right time. He is smart, but not a game changer like Jobs, not even close.

Gates is like the inevitable zit that will appear on a teenagers face after eating greasy food. I'm sure the zit worked really hard to build up pus and inflammation, but the zit is a result of the pizza, eaten by the teen, not the result of visionary work. Hence the reason why I haven't paid for that shysters operating shit in years.

That business model is definitely working. Not everyone is a PC KIA, no insults intended.

I'm not even sure how you can compare the two companies. Apple is a hardware company that has it's own OS's and some software that is intended to only work on their hardware so they can control it. Microsoft is a software company that makes software that will work on most anybodies hardware and is a big player in business and web services.

Yes, keeping consumers ill-informed is profitable. Make them feel smug in their ignorance and youll have them eating out of your hand for a lifetime.

I dont respect or support companies who survive using this mechanism. Do you?

That business model is definitely working.

Oh good, a pointless pissing contest, we haven't had one of those in awhile. They're usually about diodes, or led light companies, considering the name of the thread.

@captainmorgan, I thought you too cool a cat to get roped into this kind of nonsense, sir.

So in an effort to get this thread back on course, let me just say, its a poor craftsman that blames his tool. Either machine can get the job done, if you know what you're doing, fanboy bias doesn't change that. Please keep your pointless politics to yourselves and off this thread. Whether its Obama/Bush, PC/Mac, Yankees/Red Sox, Jesus/Mohammed, or Marvel/DC, its all the same, so grow up.

BK I'm a bit offended that you seem to be singling me out on this. I didn't start this and my first post on it was more praise of Android over iPhone than Apple vs anything. I didn't bring Microsoft up,that was a Apple fanboy. I didn't start posting slogans from Apple ad campains, that was a Apple fanboy. I didn't post meaningless charts from Apple about how the new full sized ipad air beats a two year old mini tablet from another company, that was a Apple fanboy. If you look at my posts they mostly just lay out facts and opinions held by unbiased tech journalists that I may agree with. I only made one comment that could be considered offensive and that was "sheeple" because fanboyism annoys the hell out of me,especially when they don't know what their talking about, after that I only repeated a few terms others used first. I even praised Apple for a few things, didn't see anything positive about anything from the Apple fanboys. Microsoft along with many tech companies have many warts too and I will point then out if you like. The problem with Apple fanboys is they think Apple is perfect and steve jobs a saint which is ridiculous and they attack anyone that points out even a slightest blemish.

Sir, I was complimenting you, by stating that I thought you were above such bickering. You've always come off as cool, collected, and intelligent. That is why I was surprised to see you repeatedly entering the fray on this topic. Clearly, this subject has struck a nerve with you, in a way we've never seen before on the forum.

For the record, I'm typing this on my Windows 8 phone, instead of my Mac Book Pro, because it doesn't matter which tool you use to do the job, as long as you can get the job done right.

Sorry, I contributed to off thread topic...what's the latest and greatest light so I can kick myself for spending too much on whatever I bought last year?!?!?

Yo, no-god, I was building computers and fixing others peoples computers in the late 80's, through the 90's, I'm not afraid of working on either one, Apple, IBM/Microsoft. I just happened to be alive and live through all those years of rapid change. I was harsh on Bill, I shouldn't get so graphic. Jobs was by no means a saint, but how long did it take Bill to get his platform off DOS?

I sounded like a real asshole, I don't hate on Bill or Steve, I dislike how people make demi-gods out of either when they were simple folk like you and I that were in the right place, at the right time, with the right IDEA / VISION. Peace!

Now how about that new 200 watt COB fixture that replaces a 1000 watt HPS for $275 shipped to my door?

There is no planned obsolescence in a plant's "system reqs". If your light grows now and it isnt made out of shite, you should never have to buy another. To me, this is why it makes sense to invest in a high quality fixture.

Sorry for snapping at you but like I said, uninformed fanboys are a bit of a pet peeve of mine. I'm self taught with computers and may not be a expert but have some knowledge and skills, overclocking CPUs,flashing BIOS's and OCing video cards, rooting cell phones and installing modded OS's and I even have a HP Touchpad that came with WebOS and I installed Android on it and still use it. I keep up with computer and tech news and issues and pride myself on making informed decisions,I even watch podcasts like Macbreak Weekly and Floss Weekly occasionally to keep up with Apple and Linux news. It irks me when some Apple fanboy spouts off Apple ad slogans and doesn't have a clue what they are talking about. I'm more than happy to talk pros and cons on Apple vs Microsoft vs Linux with someone who knows what their talking about but more times than not they don't have a clue, even informed Apple fans will concede the problems Apple has. PS I'm not a windows 8 fan and will stick with 7 for now but I'm considering playing around with 10 soon.

I didn't mean to fuel this argument about Apple, for what it's worth I use my iPad more than my desktop computer. I'm just not happy with theyre latest system updates, it's still a little buggy.

oh look at him, he customizes hardware, how cute. guess what buddy, i've been on this road before, but at some point you want convinience and easy of use. so why do you need to diss others on what ever they are buying with their own money? you want customizing stuff, i want to just use good built stuff. but for a strange reason you clearly think you're the better person because you root your phone? who's the hypocrite here...

Not biting GG,I know you do your homework but please don't quote a ad slogan.:wall:
"just do it"... ;)
But seriously...tech talk should be saved for DIY builds and progression...our little forum is actually very influential to the led industry. But I don't think we are ever going to get a influential computer figure to ever view this off topic rant you guys have been on. At least drop a link now and then to attempt to stay with the program.

As for fan boys...look around the forum...many guilty whether it's computers, or lights. Proof is in the pudding. Lets grow some weed...take pics or it didn't happen)...then your computers can race to upload them first.

Back to the weed and lights please

Did you get your hands on the Glue yet?

Cree has new chips...

Cree launches first XHP LED, using SC5 platform to double output of single LED
Cree Inc of Durham, NC, USA has announced commercial availability of XLamp Extreme High Power (XHP) LEDs, a new class of LEDs enabling a system cost reduction of up to 40% for lighting applications, it is claimed.

The first LEDs powered by Cree’s SC5 Technology Platform, the XLamp XHP50 and XHP70 LEDs provide twice the lumen output and improved reliability compared with previous LEDs of the same size, it is reckoned.

“The breakthrough performance of XHP LEDs enables both new design possibilities and dramatically lower system costs for LED lighting,” comments Nate Heiking, Advanced Lighting product manager at US-based Kenall Lighting. “Cree’s new class of Extreme High Power LEDs will accelerate customer adoption of LED lighting,” he reckons.

XHP LEDs allow lighting manufacturers to drastically reduce the size and cost of their lighting system design by using fewer, more reliable LEDs to achieve the same brightness, says Cree. They enable new lighting designs that require fewer optics, a smaller printed circuit board, a smaller housing and less handling. XHP LEDs also achieve longer lifetimes even at higher operating temperatures and currents than previous LED technology, it is claimed, allowing lighting manufacturers to reduce heat-sink size and cost without impacting the rated lifetime.

In addition, XHP LEDs enable other cost reductions at the system level not possible with other LED solutions, it is claimed. For example, in roadway and outdoor area lighting, on top of the luminaire cost savings, XHP LEDs can produce a much smaller and lighter luminaire that requires a less expensive pole. Similar cost savings over existing solutions may be achieved in a wide variety of lighting applications, including track, stadium and high bay.

As the first LEDs to incorporate the SC5 Technology Platform, the new XHP LEDs introduce what are reckoned to be significant advances in light output, color consistency and design flexibility. The XHP50 and XHP70 deliver up to 2546 lumens at 19 watts from a 5.0mm x 5.0mm package and up to 4022 lumens at 32 watts from a 7.0mm x 7.0mm package, respectively. Through improvements in the light conversion process, Cree has reduced LED-to-LED color variations and, among other options, offers XHP LEDs in 2- and 3-step EasyWhite bins for correlated color temperatures (CCTs) of 3500K through 2700K in 80 and 90 CRI (color rendering index). The XHP LEDs also introduce a new package that allows manufacturers to choose either 6V or 12V configurations from the same LED through the solder pad design on the circuit board.

Samples of both the XHP50 and XHP70 are available now, and production quantities are available with standard lead times.
