Respect. I like a grower who does their research.

Ive been growing with HID since 1978, and my first outside grow was in 72. So I have alot of experience. 100s of successful grows. I did get ratted out by a partner in 97, and did from 97-2009 with th feds for a 1000 clone inside grow op. Rat got off. Mine was a 10-Life Mandatory Minimum.

LED are pretty new to me though, and I was very reluctant to replace HID with LED. Especially when many companies were calling their lights 2000w equal, and only pulling maybe 300w, and didnt state umol. Im currently experimenting with 1 Gavita 1700e to compare with a 1000w Hortilux HPS.

So now I simply look for how many watts they are actually pulling, and what types of Diodes they use, and if they state umol, and If they aint Samsung/Osram, I wont use them. And if they grossly overrate their products thats a really really big turnoff. At least people should be truthful, and let their lights stand on the real merits.
I really hate misleading advertising, and is why I avoided LED for so long.

The Gavita 1700e is 42.5w sq/ft, and that is my standard. Good enough for Gavita. Good enough for me.

Phillips does make a more powerful light pulling less wattage, but they wont sell individually.

Phillips has a 630w light that is 1800umol.
They will only sell 40 at a time for $32,000 USD. But that is cheap at $800 USD per light.

They are called Phillips Greenpower Compact Top Lighting

I was reluctant myself. I did alot of research before spending $14K on lighting.. .. and of course talking the Mrs. into it as well. But, we have had great luck with the HLG's .. not a problem one. No bulb changes, heat problems, etc. in almost 2 years. The ones we have do have the Samsung 301b diodes, and we have had good results with them. Technology is always changing, and you can spend that much money, and in 2 years, they have something better like the R specs.. IDK how much more yield we would get with those over what we have, but I guess we're stuck with these until they shit the bed or we have a windfall year to upgrade (and it make sense financially).. but, yeah, we like em'. I had told Paige, "this is the most important investment we will make over any other piece of equipment"... she folded like a cheap suit when I told her the cost savings and heat.

Got a question for you HLG enthusiasts.

I got a 4x8 vegging flood tray for ebb and flow. What HLGs should I get?

Messaged an HLG representative online and he said 2 HLG 550 v2s and I asked why would I need two of those when each claims to cover a 6x6 veg area for a total of 6x12.... isnt that overkill? No response from them back for past few days.

I was thinking 2 320s (claims to cover 5x5 area each) or even 2 240s( claims to cover 4x4 area each).

What do u HLG guys think is my best option for that veg tray?

4X8... I would get 2 550's for that. You gotta remember that those will do 4.5x4.5 ft flower. I have measured PAR on the corners, and you'll need 2 for sure.

Im only vegging on that tray though. Plants will be moved after veg to another tray.

I cant get away with 2 240s or 2 320s for only vegging?

I also dont understand why is the area coverage bigger for veg 6x6 and flower is only 4.5x4.5

I suppose you could, but I think you will get better veg with 550's ... besides, if you need them for the flower room, you can use them if you need to. I can def tell the different when I try to veg clones under T5's as opposed to the HLG's. They have shorter internodes, and don't stretch as much with the HLG's... just set them at 100% and set them high on young plants, and let them grow into them.

If you'd like, i can post PAR reading from corner to corner at different heights, center, off center, etc.

Dont need it. I just go by what Gavita says, and weve now been using the 1700e for 4 months. Thanks though. I already know the Gavita is 1700umol, Hortilux 1000w HPS is 1600umol and the HLG is 1257umol. Tells me waht I need to know.

I wont use anything less than a 1600umol light source. Been using the Hortilux for 20 years.

do you adjust your HLGs as the plant grows taller and taller with their recommended 24-36 inches (or whatever they recommend i forget) above the canopy?

I leave them at the highest possible height i can (10ft) and call it a day. Just cause I feel like its gonna be a pain to try and setup the hooks and adjust it a hundred times throughout the cycle.

I constantly move mine. No more than 24 inches from canopy. To far away causes to much stretch. I want s many branches per inch as possible.
do you full blast them that close? I think my top leaves recently got bleached but they were 30+ inches away and on full blast.

this is light bleach btw right? or am i trippin balls. Trying to get used to these HLG lights but need some guidance from the pros

The Horticulture Lighting Group HLG 550 V2 R-Spec LED light will replace a single-ended 1000W HID while only drawing 480 watts at the wall and exuding the light output of 1,257 umol/s!

IMHO they are grossly overrating the HGL 550 V2 R Spec

Gavita says the 645w 1700e is good for a 4 x 4 area, and is 1700umol

HGL is 1/4 less umol vs the Gavita. 1257umol vs 1700umol

1000w Hortilux HPS is 1600umol Hortilux is 20% more umol, and is also rated for a 4 x 4.

HGL is a good light, but overrated for area covered. More like 3.4ft x 3.4ft

Gavita says LED should be 42.5w Sq/Ft using the very best Samsung/Osram Diodes
HGL is that scammie cammies company not to be confused with HLG

2x 240s wouldn't be the best even light spread, but 3 x240s would be pretty good. Just raise them higher for veg than you would for flower 24"-30" , I would do that rather than dimming in your situation.

Personally I think 2 x 550s though would work is overkill and more money than you need to spend.

Yep. 100%. I also veg 100% with them. We start all seedling, and rooted clones with 100% output.

The SUN at the equator in full sun is much more powerful than the lights.

The main thing is you have to have alot of fresh air, or CO2 enrichment or they can/will suffer. They wont have enough CO2 for metabolism. Air/CO2 is critical. IMHO thats the main reason people get light stress. In the winter we can get a 1000w Hortilux HPS/1600umol as close as 12 inches with no light stress, but we have huge ventilation/air flow.

What yield do you pull from your LED in your space?
