I dont know if the same applies to CMH but you arent supposed to have air passing directly over DE HPS or MH bulbs.

i have the lid OFF and no air.. i just like the hood size. i have 2 of them. each do a 4x4 spot nicely

This is my first grow but I went with CMH w/LED.
CMH covers UV to far red and everything in between while being about as efficient as HID gets. It also adds some heat, which is helpful most of the year in my climate and growing space.
The LED strips add a ridiculous number of point sources of light which should help the edge and lower bud sites to develop more. The strips can also be raised and lowered individually if the canopy isn't even. We will see but I think I'm going to be close to a gram per watt. For a first grow of auto's I'll take it.
