Most websites say that the terpene limonene is used for relaxation against anxiety and depression, but some websites say it is what gives you energy. I am starting to believe it is what causes my anxiety attacks that I get so often with most strains. I just tried Purple Kush today and it was completely relaxing and super euphoric. I also noticed on Leafly that it doesn’t have any Limoneme at all, although I know that it’s hard to know exactly what terpenes and their levels strains have because it depends on the grower and how it is grown. Could I be right though!?? Maybe I do need to stay away from limonene. Also there is a terpene in weed that is found in black pepper and if you ever have an anxiety attack with weed just chew 4 peppercorns and put them under your tongue and smell the jar. Your panic attack will disappear in seconds. Trust me it works! Neil Young told Howard Stern about it on his show one day.
Yo idk if this thread is still active- but I have dug for a bit to find this just to say I completely agree!! I have a theory on why because I too suffer from anxiety when smoking high limonene strains (AKA ‘sativas’)
(for context I am a budtender and I am still doing a lot of learning and research, but this is just my best guess based on my knowledge thus far).
My theory is that people who generally suffer more frequently with anxiety or have a predisposed mental illness surrounding the deficiently of Serotonin neurotransmitters- are WAY more sensitive to Limonene (at least in conjunction w cannabinoids bc ive never known someone who’s gotten anxious from a lemon). Now this almost seems obvious because a lot of different things can cause an anxious person to become overstimulated like that- but here’s why Limonene has that potential;
its because it causes a boost in serotonin release, causing that ‘uplifting, energizing, and focused’ mood change, that’s why people generally go to ‘Sativas’ for that associated effect. Normal people with the RIGHT amount of neurotransmitters will feel better and uplifted, even giggly- where those who have that deficiency- are a LOT more likely to become overstimulated and anxious w/ racing thoughts, paranoia, and restlessness.
So.. maybe it really all lies within the right ratios of terps to cannabinoids? I’ve found that some strains that don’t have much limonene (usually the 3rd or 4th most abundant opposed to 1st or 2nd unless caryophllene is right behind it from my enxperience) like Blue Dream, or any Sativa-Hybrid close to that, is just fine and I still find those energizing uplifting effects!
does anyone agree? Also, does anyone kinda get what I mean by the specific ratios of terps and cannabinoids?
