You sound like me -- smoked for 30 years before it ever occurred to me to plant some (duh.. for me, that is).

You really do need a dedicated indoor light source (preferably a high-intensity discharge variety), or a safe outdoor location planted after the soil hits 60 degrees F (15C). Plants in a window are unlikely to get enough light, or the right timing of light to make it into flowering stage.

The "Buy Dutch Seeds" and "Amsterdam Seeds" sites also have good growing guides on them.

As general advice, it's really worth the time to do as much research as you can stand before you plant a single seed. It's not super-complicated, but there are a lot of silly little mistakes that can be easily avoided. I got so hyped up about the thing, I was making huge mistakes right out of the gate just out of impatience. An extra day or two on the 'net will resolve many, many questions and save you a lot of time.

u r not the only one that likes too go cheap
u could use the tubes but i think the compact one r better and cheaper to get i got a pack of 5 for like 12,13 dollarsan they were equivalent to a 100w reg bulbs so i hae like 5 or 6 of them up now but if ur going to get them get the ones that say daylight or sunlight ones those are for vegging warm white ithink it was is more for flowering

how many bulbs and what wattage? should i just pick out the best two out of 8 once they're sexed? At what age do I sex them. If there are "balls" growing on them does it automaticall make them male?

my plants are about 5-6 inches tall with 3-4 sets of leaves. if I just do one in each pot how many bulbs should I have for each plant? is one enough?

it depends on the light how many watts and how big the plant is too
u want to make sure all the leafs are geting light
if using cfl's its good cuase u could have the bulbs like 1 inch or less up to the plant becasue the bulbs dont give off alot of heat rule of thumb is put ur hand or finger between the bulb and the top or whever u r gong to have the light at hold it between there for a couple of secs if ur finger dont burn then thats good to have it there
depending on the plant size and watts of the bulb i would have to or 3 bulbs on 1 plant
just to give it a nice light ratio on all leafs bbutt like 1 or 2 lights is ok too
but the more light the better it will be cuase of the lumens
u could always test it and see what works better for u

If you choose to go the CFL route those claims of "equal to 100w" incandescent bulb really mean nothing. The actual number is the only wattage detail that even means anything. Look for a place on the packaging that tells you how many lumens the bulb puts out, pick the highest ones they have.

The "K" numbers you keep hearing are the colour spectrum of the light, basically you want a cool colour for veg, warm colour for flower. Higher K, cooler light.

Personally, I think you'd be happier with your results buying a lower wattage HID.
