Looking for an experienced cloner.

Hi everyone,
I'm doing a small outdoor grow and have had some issues with fungas gnats. I flushed the soil with a hydrogen peroxide solution and laid some sand on top of the soil but for one plant the damage was too much.
The bottom of the stem was been eaten down to the core so it's only a matter of time before that plant is screwed.
I've decided I'm going to try and take the top of the plant and "clone" it.
I've never cloned my plants before, but I was planning on makeing some clones once this crop got a little bigger.
My question is has anybody ever tried anything like this? or does anybody know if there is anything I need to do differently because this is the top of a plant and not a branch?

Any ideas or comments will be very appreciated.

For those who care, it worked. I cut of the top 8 inches of my plant on a 45ish degree angle and then gashed up the bottom a bit. I put it in water immediately. I dipped it in root growth hormone and than stuck it 2 or 3 inches into Vermiculite. The plant was looking very poor when I did this. The majority of the big leaves were a bad shade of brown. I took off all of the fan leaves that were bigger than an inch wide.
The Stem looked like an up-side-down J when I first did this but after one night it had perked back up and was straight again. I'm watering it everyday now, trying to keep the medium wet all the time, I know this isn't what you want to do for healthy plants but I was under the impression that for new clones you want to keep them as wet as possible.
I'm still looking for help as this is my first clone. Is cloning the Top of your plant not as unusual as I seam to think it is? I couldn't find any posts online of people who had tried this. Again any input would be greatly appreciated.

its harder to clone the top rather than the bottom of the plant and allso if this plant is not so diesese ressitant u probly shouldnt clone it but if u do keep the clones small when cutting, they root faster i have ppp clones at the moment took them about a month ago u need a clone chamber of some sort to keep the humidity high 95-100 percent humid and allso they need to be some wot warm to promote fast healthy roots flurescent lighting would be best i use a combination of a 400 watt during the day a flurescent by night
the clolour of the leaves will change yellowy brown while rooting thats normal ALLWays keep them moist no nutes they cant handle it give them 24hours of light here are some pics of my clones
this is just the tip of the ice berg there is much more info tips and tricks out there if u find any of this usefull please get back to me let no wots goin on send some pics it is the most stressfull time for a clone a branch tip that once grew now has to grow roots in order to survive

your good to go. it will still root if done right.. you can clone any part of a plant top or branch.

thats true was just saying that the top or newer parts of growth or harder generly to clone

clones from lower branches they contain more of the proper hormones The tops contain the oldest this being said my pics of ppp clone i just posted were actually the top i crowned it and used those

i forgot to mention that a plant thats in flower is going to root better then one taken in veg due to the less nitregon duringflower. now if you shut down the nitregon during veg your % of clones rooting is going to be better...

absoultly true more starch less carbahydrates but this grower has allready made the cuts

Thanks for the help mygirls and dJ Herb, I WAS giving my plant a bit of nutes but I'll stop that and just give it straight lake water.
Question for Mygirl, you said that a plant in flowering will root better than veg, I was under the impression that it's not good to take a clone from a plant in flowering stage because you have to revert it back into veg stage.
I'm attempting to post a picture of what my "clone" looks like. I left a lot of the stem because I wasn't really attempting to clone my plant, rather to save it as it was in the process of dying.
I'm surprised by how good it looks considering I haven't really done much. I water it daily, have it under normal sun light+ a few hours under a light so that it doesn't go into flowering stage. A humidity chamber isn't really an option for me so I hope the humidity levels in the air are sufficient until it grows a formidable root structure.

I make 64 clones every month, it makes no difference if it comes from the top or the bottom, they all root out evenly in my case. Maybe Im a statistical conundrum, but I don't think it matters what part it comes from.

Well all is lost, My one plant that's healthy and this clone I made are both males. Since these are the only two plants I have I'm going to let them grow and try to make hash out of their worthless corpses.
