So it's a fancy bong - high temperature. Did he have to heat it that much or was he showing off?

I think thats about right.
normally, I use a propane torch, I blast at the nail until one corner barely starts to turn red.... if one corner is barely red, that means the whole nail is hot enough. too hot and it "ruins" the hoot and the taste especially, and makes it harsher on the lungs. too cold and it doesnt smoke worth shit (tastes amazing though). if you heat it up too much, it ruins the nail too by speeding up the oxidization process. propane torches are a lot hotter than the recommended butane torch, so they can damage your nail a lot quicker, but its much much cheaper. a lot of the titanium nails are threaded, and you can replace just the head part for like 20$ after a year of heavy use... cheap.
its basically smoking "blade hoots" through the bong.... very very simple set up. you get a piece of metal red hot, drop your oil onto the hot metal and breathe the fumes.
it goes into any bong that has the proper female attachment. an titanium nail set up like that costs anywhere from 30$ to 150$.... mainly depending on the nail, and weather its real grade 2 titanium with a brand name, or just grade 2 titanium with no brand name... or some other cheap chinese metal for $5.
you can also use glass nails, which offer a different taste. but you need to make sure its a quartz nail (like glass on steroids... very tough stuff) and not a borosilicate nail (cheap glass that will melt from your torch and crack after a day of using it)

harbor freight sounds better, more accurate. . makes me think of the ocean.. vancouver... right where the giant ships meet the harbor straight from china with their extremly cheap and flimsy products to drop off directly at HF. I dont know how you guys shop there for tools... its such garbage here. incredibly cheap though and if youre only needing it for a one time thing, its not so bad. but to try to wrench on bikes and trucks and open engines with HF tools... fuck no.
any complaints on your manifold that you got?
maybe HF has better stuff than princess auto here in canada, because some of the stuff is very very poor quality.
