Everyone I know that has bought an HP notebook has either been plagued with faulty power jacks or faulty GPUs. I have a Toshiba Satellite I still use daily that is 6 years old. I bought an Asus Eeepc awhile back for vacation which I like also. As far as desktops go, I build my own sticking to Asus+Intel platforms, then they all of course get Linux. Never had a Mac or really even used one for more than 5 minutes, so its unfair of me to judge them, I can however state they are out of my budget regardless, then again I haven't had to pay for any software in bout 6 years.

Holy shit a lot of people here really dislike macs. Lemme throw my two cents in since I got roasted left and right lol. I owned a mac for 5 years. 2005-2010 and I loved it. I never had any problems with it until one day I dropped it and cracked the LCD screen. I decided to go the cheap route and purchase a 400.00 HP from walmart that lasted be just over a year. Based on my previous experience I wanted to go back to the Mac. For the trolls out there saying I want to look good at the coffee shop? Go eff off pricks. I do a lot of video editing and apples are my preferred choice when it comes to that. I'm not some hipster that sits at starbucks drinking coffee skying with people. I had my mac laptop for a LONG TIME and I was very happy buying another one. I will not return it as I have no reason to. I make good money and I wanted to throw down on a comp.. and my preference was and is the Mac. I spent under 1,200 and got a $100 gift card as well. I have no problem with windows 7, It's that a lot of these companies are making inferior products (i.e. 400.00 computers) that break down quickly and need to be replaced. I'm sure if I spent 800-1200 I could've gotten a sick ass computer with windows 7, but I have become hesitant since the last one I had. I know my Mac is going to last me a long time.
Basically your whole reasoning seems to be you bought a shit computer so now think that a mac is the only alternative. Wrong. I've had my machines for just as long as you had your mac without an issue. You can buy a more reliable, more powerful, and more upgradable computer that will cost hal;f the price and runs OSX invalidating the usage of the machine as any form of arguing point.

My school used Asus Eeepc's for the leaning support department. They crashed every five minutes, the power supplies broke and the screens spontaneously blacked out. Then they decided to just get secondhand macbooks. I still have my school Eeepc under the desk below me right now and the thing has been dead for 6 months XP

I've been put off of Asus for life...

I grew up with PCs. My daddy built my first and has been a technician for 15 years. We all used to hate macs for the sake of n0t wanting to 'jump on the bandwagon'. I give up. I love my mac, and should anything ever happen to it I can just skip down to the Apple Store for a chat and snacks during repair.

A large part of my reasoning is that I had a Mac, it worked well, I switched to something inferior and went back. Another reason, Like I mentioned, is I do video editing and Mac's are my preferred choice when it comes to that. Basically the mac was reliable as it lasted me 5 years, powerful because it was fast as hell and efficient, and I didn't need to upgrade it because of how well it worked. I have a well paying job and I'm fiscally conservative which in turn means I have the money to buy a Mac, (overpay as you might say). You tip top toker are kind of acting like a prick because I've been very cooperative with everyone putting down my decision to get a mac. Instead of having people provide me with (tips, tricks, and shortcuts) I've been spammed with all this bullshit about why I shouldn't own one. Yes I understand the upgrade-ability, easy to find cheap replacement parts, and cool new features of Windows 7 pc/notebooks but I didn't want one, (and my mac) I'm not returning it, and this thread has been hijacked and flown into a different direction. If any does have some (tips, advice, tricks) feel free to post them, but I'm kind of sick and tired of listening to these people bitch about Mac's.

I do video editing is everyone's excuse but you know you can do it with a pc too..

I think he is just trying to figure out why buy an overpriced computer that has a operating system that restricts the type of software you can run.

That was my thought too... wtf does video editing have to do with anything?
Ok so you prefer iMovie of Movie Maker, that's great. So you bought it based on the free video editing software it came with? Smart move...

EDIT: Who does video editing or any editing on a 13" screen? you're like borderline netbook size... How can you even read this?

I'm just interested why someone would waste money without being able to justify it. If you're that kind of rich dude, cool, still doesn't make any sense to me though :)

And yes, the "what do you use it for" argument is null and void. Yes, mac is typically used by audio engineers, video folk, but the point is that OSX can be run on a run of the mill computer just fine :)

So let me give everyone the opportunity to shine. Post what computer you would get for 1200.00. State the model, any upgrades, what makes it great, and why you chose that model.

I'd like to get the opinion of others.

Post whatever man. I am just kind of trying to change the subject here because obviously people want to talk shit on this thread. Considering I've been on this Forum for years helping others grow and I hardly ever talk bad about other I figured I would ask some of the RIU community for advice with my new purchase. However the responses I got were overwhelmingly negative and flat our rude and unnecessary. I'm just kind of like WTF man. I hadn't been on here in a few months and now the community has changed a bit.

I can't understand why everyone is ragging on the mac's, the guy only asked for a little advice on shortcuts and navigating his way around OSX instead everyone tore him a new arsehole for having the gall to spend his money where he wanted.

I repair PC's myself and the occasional mac so it's always handy to know a few shortcuts.
