I saw a lot of literature on a new product trying to differentiate between sodium hypochlorite, and hypochlorous acid and why that if you use bleach or calcium hypochlorite, you won't have the same solution that they advertise: with the active ingredient being hypochlorous acid.
I don't remember the product but then I started remembering some of my basic pool chemistry (I'm a retired pool guy, and total water geek).
So here's a little secret everybody should know...
The only difference between hypochlorite and hypochlorous acid is...
The pH!!!
It's as simple as that folks. When you change pH from a positive above seven most of the chlorine in the solution are hypochlorite ions with a small percentage being hypochlorous.
When the pH goes below seven, the effectivity of chlorine ramps up significantly.
All that to say this - by adding calcium hypochlorite to your reservoir and keeping your reservoir's pH in range (5.7 to 6.2) all that hypochlorite turns into hypochlorous acid magically all by itself. You did the job and you didn't even know it.
And that folks gives you the same active ingredient that they're trying to tell you is different.
