Well, I don't claim to be an expert, but, personally, I look for the point when the trichome heads have turned from clear to mostly cloudy white, with maybe 5-10% that have already turned amber. However, these links will probly give you a better explanation.

In the end, it's still your call, and depends on what kind of "medicinal" effects you're looking for. Ideally, you'd want to grow a bunch of plants of the same strain, and harvest each at slightly different times...then dry, cure and smoke-test the buds from different times and decide which ones are your favorites. Then, next time you grow this strain, you'll know when to chop them all to get what you're looking for. However, if you're growing only one of each, you could still cut off some of the buds at different times, and do the test this way....or, just chop the whole thing and hope that you picked the right time. In the end, I'm not sure there's any "rule" about this...it seems to be more a matter of preference, so experimentation and experience will tell you what to look for to get the effects that you're after.

Just checked my seed inventory this week....I have a five-pack of DP Strawberry Cough fem beans that I'm gonna grow out next round (as soon as we find a new place to live).
