My first grow since the 80's

I am in Maryland, and they just passed the new law that allows us to grow two plants per year. Geez thanks guys! The law makes no sense with all the conditions they added but I am taking advantage of it anyway. I am a licensed Nurseryman, so I have to be careful so that I do not lose my license. I primarily grow ornamentals especially Japanese Maples, so I do have some growing experience just not Cannabis.

I started these girls indoors and moved them outside in Mid-June. I did a lot of research on the whole subject of nutrients, structure, maintenance etc. and so far, everything is working out. I started my plants in 4”x9” Treepots to get the best root system I could. After they started to get root bound, I transplanted to large 6”x16” Treepots and that is when my plants took off. I dug 32”x32”x24” holes and used a mixture of the soil and compost that I use for my Japanese Maples.

For nutrients I am using Sensi-Grow A&B, Voodoo juice and Superthrive and I will move to Sensi-Bloom A&B, Big Bud and Overdrive as they go to flower.

The support structure I am using is from a cattle panel that I bought at Tractor supply and cut up to make two 4x4x6 foot trellis systems with middle racks. I will add plant stakes in between the rows and columns as needed for additional support. Long 9-foot T-Posts pounded three feet into the ground provide sturdy anchor points.

The seeds are feminized MauiWowie from ILGM. The choice for the seeds came down to heat tolerance and ease of growing in our humid summer environment.

My only question comes down to when will I know to shift from vegetative stage to flowering stage?

Welcome to RIU! Your setup looks nice, it will be interesting to see what ideas you will come up with already being an avid grower. Since you are outdoors unless the plants are autos or you are planning on shading them they will go into flower themselves once the days start getting shorter.

The days are getting shorter already. I get 14:30 of daylight now in MD and by end of August it will only be 13:08. I see on some discussions that it will be when the daylight falls below 13:00. Still not sure.

Strain specific on the dark time to trigger bloom cycle some will do it at 8.5hr darkness others need 11.5
Youll know when it happens, when thdy trigger their bloom cycle you will see a big upward growth spurt before the nugs start forming

It’s also very odd that it looks like almost all your leaves are three bladed.

I just noticed that after you mentioned it. All have 3 blades (see pics). I see it could indicate some sort of problem. I looked at photos of other Maui Wowie plants on ILGM and they all look to be 3 bladed. I hope it is genetics. Tks

I noticed that and thought they were reveged.

Look like revegging to me as well, but could be strain related. When you had them inside, how many hours of light/dark were they getting?

Regardless, it's around the time, give or take a few weeks, for plants to begin flowering in the US, so I doubt you'll see a full reveg

Cool, I had an auto that did it once, but it still yielded ok.

Likely one of three things…

1. Clones taken from a flowering plant (monster cropping). You can disregard this if grown from seed, obviously.
2. Light stress related reveg of some sort.
3. Genetics.

At any rate, should be no issues to worry about.

Look closely at the tops in the crotch where they branch off from the main stem every day. They may already be showing. It depends on the variety and your latitude. I’m around 41 latitude and running a few different varieties; they are all flowering now.
I would bet that they just started flowering before you put them outside and started to reveg, hence the 3 leaf blades. I had a variety throw out single bladed leaves off the main stem last year after sexing it indoors and putting it outside because it went back into veg. I’ve had many photoperiod plants begin flowering on a 18/6 schedule if they’re root bound, stressed at all or even get to a certain age.

Some plants take their time flowering. I'm in VA and have some outdoors. All from seed in fabric pots. One is just starting to really make flowers while it's sisters are blooming and look like 5wks along.

Now I see the flowering and yes you all were right....they are very noticeable. BTW, a few comments were made about the 3 leaf blades but shortly after I transplanted my plants to the outside all of the new leaves are 5 bladed. They seem to be doing quite well.

Years of outside growing and all I really have to fight consistently is powdery mildew full time, and caterpillars starting in early August.
PM can be kept in check with spraying simple high PH water once a week. 1 tablespoon of potassium or sodium bicarbonate per gallon of water will do the job.

Caterpillars = BT Thuricide once a week every week in flower. Organic rated and destroyed by sunlight in a few hours this has been my choice in fighting Caterpillars for nearly 10 years. They decimated my first big modern era outside attempt and I wound up destroying over 5 pounds of what should have been.......

The actual trigger for cannabis is 14.5. At 15 they veg and at 14 they flower.
In practice only June and July have long enough days to hold cannabis in vegetative state.

I encounter powdery mildew and all kinds of caterpillarsBumps_20230826_140243.jpg and insects on my Japanese Maples in August here in Maryland. I posted this close up picture elsewhere and was told not to worry about these bumps. Do you agree?
