Hello All-
Weather update....
Thunder storms today. I got up early to finish up a hauling job I've been working on this weekend. It was warm and sticky this morning, 73.6 our over night low. Got to the job site just after 7:00am. and was done by 10:00am. Then went to have breakfast, while in the restaurant it started thundering and lighting. Raining now, thunder and lighting everywhere, CDF boys are running around out there like chickens with no heads. Certainly going to be at least a few fires starting due to the lighting strikes. Lets hope it stays away from me.

Highs have been in the upper 90's with lows in the low 70's with higher humidity levels.

Will need to finish up the last 4 girls in the bud box this evening, they got a bit wet, and I don't want mold messing up these buds too, so they will be trimmed this afternoon/evening.

Good luck with the fires treeman, they can be quite a risk this time of year. Hope they stay away from you.

One of the most terrifying nights I ever spent was on a backpacking trip in the Sierra's when huge thunder storms came thru all night. We were camped up under some trees until lightning split a tree about 20 yards from us, then we spent the rest of the night out in a big meadow getting soaked. I believe there something like 50-60 fires started that night. I think that was the last backpacking trip I ever took. Mother Nature can be scary.

Thanks Hodge, here's an update-
Several small fires in the area, I'm listening to the scanner and sounds like they have one burning not to damn far from here. The road they're mentioning is just a couple/few miles away, but it's a long road, 7-8 miles, and I see no air attack going on near us, nor do I see smoke, so I'm thinking it's down the road a bit. I do hear planes flying over, but I think they're spotter planes.

Trouble with lighting strikes is that they can stay smoldering for a few hours, then over night Poof, thing starts raging.

I've spent my fair share of time in the woods, logging, backpacking, working for the National Park Service, and one of the most frighting times was on Half Dome when a thunder storm came through. No where to run, and very few places to hide. We took refuge in these over hanging rocks, kinda was like a cave, but not really, where the exfoliating rock is hanging over each other. Lighting was striking the dome, loudest thunder I've ever hear, thought I may die for a few minutes there. I never seen no shit like that before! That was my first major hike when I moved to the park in 87, and I was warned about the lighting too, but I was young and dumb, and felt indestructible, I wasn't going to stop because of a "chance" of thunder storms.....LOL. Mother nature can be a bitch when she wants!

Hand crews are staying the night, resources are being brought in, think I'm going for a drive to see what's up.

Okay, the fire is about 5-6 miles away as a crow flies, It is down hill from here, and lots of open land between here and there.

Had a chance to climb half dome back in high school. Friends and I took a glow in the dark wham-o frisbee along with some mushrooms and killer hash. Got up top, (what a climb) a little before sunset, climbed over the safety cable and sat with my feet over the lip smoking that hash and enjoying the most spectacular view. Longest I've ever seen a frisbee fly. lol First encounter with a bear also but that's another story. Now days I really don't like heights. or bears..

Well seems like we have 4 active fires. The one I was concerned with consumed 10 acres and is under control. Here's the posting from our local news....
As July 2011 came to a close a weather system that brought rain, lightning and thunder to the area yesterday also had several fires begin because of lightning strikes. According to CAL FIRE as of 9:00 P.M. there were 4 active fires that burned 118 acres yesterday in Madera and Mariposa counties. Multiple lightning strikes occurred throughout Madera & Mariposa Counties with minimal rainfall. As a result 8 confirmed fires have sparked in CAL FIRE's jurisdiction. Madera County: Bailey Fire, 10 acres, forward progress stopped. Hensley Fire: 95 acres, forward progress stopped located off Rd 400 below the Lake Hensley dam, northeast of Madera. Mariposa County: Grove Fire, 10 acres, forward progress stopped. Heavy mop-up, Silver Fire: 3 acres, Forward progress stopped.

Looks like forward progress has been stopped for these fires. All good news! Not out of the woods yet, but there are no major fires in the state, so resources are high!

Officials at Yosemite National Park say a 26-year-old woman fell 600 feet to her death while climbing Half Dome over the weekend.
The woman was identified Monday as Hayley LaFlamme of San Ramon.
Park spokeswoman Kari Cobb says LaFlamme was hiking with three friends Sunday when she slipped in the rain while descending the enormous granite dome. She fell on the shoulder of the dome where the cables end that help hikers navigate the final ascent.
An investigation is underway, but Cobb says rain likely played a factor by making the granite slippery.
It's the 14th fatality this year in the park, which averages between five and six by August.
Last month, three people were swept to their deaths when they entered the Merced River above the 317-foot Vernal Fall.

Nah, I took the elevator...lol Can say it was one of the most spectacular views I've ever had. There was another climb we took in the back country, don't recall the peak but was beautiful. Goathead peak??? Treeman, ever hear of that?

Can't say I've herd of that peak...
Lots of peaks in Yosemite, Cathedral, pilot, Mammoth, Tuolumne, Emelia Earhart, and many more, but never herd of Goathead peak.

Warm again today mid to upper 90's, with higher then normal humidity, but a bit of cooling on the way.

Here's the latest on the fires....

There are 16 total fires covering 126 acres that is currently 90% contained with full containment expected tomorrow at 6:00 P.M. Multiple lightning strikes occurred throughout Madera & Mariposa Counties with minimal rainfall. As a result 16 confirmed fires have sparked in CAL FIRE's jurisdiction. All of the fires were in remote areas with difficult terrain and access for crews. Forward progress of all fires has been stopped. Madera County: Bailey Fire,19 acres - 90% contained, Hensley Fire, 95 acres - 90% contained located off Rd 400 below the Lake Hensley dam, northeast of Madera. Mariposa County: Grove Fire, 10 acres - 90% contained and Silver Fire, 3 acres - 90% contained. Total Fire Personnel: 266 (256 CAL FIRE)
Engines: 40 (39 CAL FIRE)
Fire crews: 10 CAL FIRE
Dozers: 3 CAL FIRE
Water Tenders: 4



I think all is good, no update for today yet, which is good, other news made the front page, so I'm guessing the threat is over.

We would start at Tuolumne meadows and hike down to the valley, did it a couple times. The peak I was refering to is back before you get to the meadows. Back in 75 we heard a plane had crashed in a lake near the base of this 15 thousand foot peak, went looking for those soaked bales of marijuana...LOL ah! the follies of youth..

We got delayed 24 hrs, TLD is in SoCal, picking him up tomorrow afternoon late when his bus arrives, and up to Hodges, be there by 7:30pm-8:00pm., I hope. Then up to the property the next day, early I think, but TLD and Hodge are talking they're making the plans.
Looking forward to getting away without the family, haven't done that in years. I'll miss them a day or two after I'm gone I'm sure.

Have the peach pies done, picked some blackberries this morning and wife will make you guys a deep dish berry pie fresh tonight for your visit.
Was looking at a map of Yosemite and couldn't find the peak (Goat Head) thinking it's near Cathedral lake area, could be wrong was a long time ago. The plant I was having the problems with branches breaking and replaced, well new plant is doing the same thing, Gophers? Just going to let it go and be happy with anything from her, good thing I had back ups.
Have a safe trip guys.....

Hodge, are the chickens maybe somehow getting into the plants & breaking the branches?

Not sure what's up now, guess I'm picking him up in Sac now this evening. Threw a wrench into my plans, damn.
O'well...it is what it is....I'll burn one and get over it!

Weathers still warm, 98.4 our high yesterday, and 67.7 our low. Slight cool down this week.

Girls were sprayed yesterday with 4 gallons of "Green light fruit tree spray" to fight all those bad things that show up during flowering. Another spraying next week, and another after that.
