religion is for people who are afraid of death ... those who live a full life and have found some joy's need to have no such fear. I would like to think that there some wonderful afterlife awaiting my arrival but common sense tells me ... I better enjoy the time I have ......

I think that is partly true. Religion to a lot of people is just complicated superstition. Basic superstitions are practiced when people feel they have no control over a situation. A lot of athletes are superstitious. They have to have their lucky shirt or touch their nose three times before a game, ect. The more a sport or game depends on luck, the more superstitious the players tend to be. For example, a poker player is much more likely to have superstitious rituals than a track runner. Superstition gives us the illusion that we understand and have control over something. What do people have less control of than their own death and afterlife? It only makes sense that the most elaborate and popular superstition is built around these concepts.

However there are some that have made peace with their own demise, and still turn to religion, at that point usually referred to simply as spiritualism, not as a way to understand death, but to understand life and thier place in reality.

I detest religious people. I think that probably every theist in the world has an inferior mind to me. Possibly because they believe in fairy tales and superstition, when I believe the human race should be evolved past that by now.

There are good religious people and bad religious people, but not really any bright religious people.

The Atheist and the Gays act just alike, once they got acceptance from the masses. They have convinced themselves that the are superior to the masses the only thing I have against them is this pushing that were wrong and there right and the constant attacks if you are straight or if you believe in anything. My faith grows stronger everyday.

Where in the world do you get this information? Atheists have power and acceptance? Atheists don't give a fuck about power or acceptance.

Secondly, aren't you the pot calling the kettle black. If an atheist says a christian is wrong, why is that so different from what a christian is doing? Do you see atheists knocking doors to spread their beliefs (or lack thereof)? Throughout my life I have been called a satanist so many times because of my being an atheist. I have never called a catholic a boy molesting, war mongering, sociopath. At least not to their face, because I have some respect.

Atheists have convinced themselves (if they have) that there is some superiority to their beliefs, because Atheism does not teach someone to hate any group of people, to make war on people who do not believe, to live their lives serving some benevolent creature that we are not 100% positive even exists, and to constantly disobey the morals of our beliefs because we know that this benevolent creature is so forgiving. Atheists are pacifists, and we believe that we set our own morals, not defined by what some lunatic claiming to have spoken to talk to an all powerful supernatural being is telling us is right and wrong, but because we accept that as humans we are lucky enough to have brains that we can consider our own existence and with this comes the responsibility to use that brain and decide for ourselves what is good or bad.

You continue your religion driven bigotry against gays and atheists. Sit in your world of ignorance and misguided hatred.

Not so much that you don't understand, he could fully understand the religion. Bigotry, by definition, is hatred for someone for having a differing opinion than their own. Which, in this case, you are probably right.

While I am not qualified to say any one atheist is superior to any one religious person, the difference is that the atheist has taken the time to subject the beliefs of religion to proper doubt. Religion treats doubt as if it is offensive to god, and teaches followers to be satisfied with ignorance. Atheists are simply people who are careful, aware and consistent, all traits which inspire pride, especially when we are constantly dealing with people who are unaware, under vigilant, and inconsistent in judgment. We make no excuses for religion and hold that belief to the same standard we hold every belief, something that religious people don't have a problem with when dealing with matters of health and technology. How many religious people would take a drug without it going through process of doubt and being shown to hold merit? Indeed, religious people subject other religions to doubt, but give a pass to their own. Can you not see how this can lead to the opinion that religious people are inferior thinkers?

We are all atheists about most of the gods that societies have ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further. When you list the reasons why you reject all other possible gods in this world, you will be listing the reason I reject yours.

I like that quote, because it makes me think how religious people point out past religions as "mythology." People never stop to think that at one time, people actually believed this was completely true.

Religion, like folk tales, was created to explain things in life. Why we are here, why it rains, why the sky is blue. With science giving real proven explanations to many of these, religion has become somewhat of a redundancy for our race. Just my opinion, though.

really? so you athiest all think with one mind? huh, weird.

you should get over yourself. most people could care less what you think. and there you go telling all athiest how to think. are you sure you dont think your God.....i mean "believe in God"?

You continue your religion driven bigotry against gays and atheists. Sit in your world of ignorance and misguided hatred.

yes, pretty "right out of the handbook". if you aint an athiest you are a bigoted homophob. any more cliches bud?
stuck it in the quote in red.

We are all part of something greater than our individual selves, whether it is God or something else remains to be seen. IMO the Bible and ALL religious texts are nothing more than fantastic stories mainly for the purpose of control.

Well Jeff, seeing as I can't quote a quote without unnecessary work...

To your first statement, my response would be no. Whilst generalizing was probably wrong, I stand by my claim. You have never in history seen atheists demonstrate any kind of attempt of power over any other religion. The only acceptance that atheists have pursued is an acceptance of our rights as human beings, not atheists.

Secondly, whilst I can point out that I have said nothing to anyone persons face on here, I will not go that route. However, every claim that I did say in that statement cannot refute historical fact.

Thirdly: I don't usually want to point out grammatical mistakes, but the difference between "your" and "you're" is huge, and it would greatly help me understand you better if you would just learn proper grammar to some degree. Anyways, my statement was not telling atheists how to think in any way. By logical standards, which most atheists would agree their beliefs are founded upon, there would be no logical reason what so ever to kill or put ourselves at unnecessary risk to be killed when we all accept that this is it. You find me an atheist that won't agree to the comments on morals that I made, and I will retract.

Fourth: Read the whole god damn thread. That post was in response to another post.

How about this for cliche:

Thomas Jefferson said:
"Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burned, tortured, fined, and imprisoned, yet we have not advanced one inch toward uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half of the world fools and the other half hypocrites." Notes on Virginia

Thomas Jefferson said:
"Christianity is the most perverted system that ever shone on man."

yup. when i die, i want to be thrown in the ground in a nice field or something, so i can decompose and give live back to the earth. i think its foolish to put yourself in a casket. are we going to dig you up later and look at you? i guess in criminal investigations they MIGHT, but still... unless youre famous, nobody really remembers you existed after like 50 years postmortem.
most of us spend our whole lives consuming things around us. then when we die, we put ourselves in a box, so it takes longer to decompose. we dont even give ourselves back to the earth. plus they put chemicals in you when you die, so you look good at the funeral. thats probably not good. idk theres just something about it that feels wrong to me lol. i think giving my body back to mother earth would be the least i could do

Feels just about the same as it did before you came out and said it. I am not sure how the possibility that I am bigoted against religious people changes the fact that they are intellectually inferior. I must also be bigoted against people who think the world is flat, or people who still think being gay is a choice, or people who think marijuana is harmful and should be illegal, or a thousand other things that many people believe. Those are all beliefs that, in my mind, would and do make someone ignorant, just like faith in religion does.

So whats your point?

i think black people are dumb. you probably dont even understand that this is how you sound.

religion is protected by discrimination laws as is race, sex, handicap, creed, age. i think i hit them all.

anyway, you "thinking" your smarter than all religious people shows your ignorance and puts you at the head of the class of dumbasses.

Obviously race is not a choice, where holding a belief, which is essentially forming a conclusion, is a choice. Religious people make the conclusion that there is a deity. Atheists remain unconvinced. Knowing someone is Atheist tells you precisely what they DO NOT believe, but it tells you nothing about what they may believe. Knowing someone is black tells you nothing about what they believe or how they think. Knowing someone is religious tells you that they accept the claim of a deity, which tells you a lot about how they think.

Religion never hesitates to play the hurt card, or to vilify those who don't conform. Faith is in fact ignorance. When do we look to faith for comfort? When we don't understand God, when we are given reasons to doubt God, anytime we question things that are unknowable about God; faith is the answer we are given. Faith stops people from asking questions without providing any answers. Faith teaches us to be satisfied with not knowing; ignorance. Skeptics do not accept ignorance as a reason to hold a belief. When someone sights faith as a reason to believe something, there are in fact saying "I can not explain why I believe this claim, but I believe it anyway." An atheist simply has a higher standard for belief.

If you take someone who simply refuses to accept a claim you are making, and label them a bigot, it shows your inability to truly grasp the situation. The better solution is to simply form a more convincing argument for your claim, and stop being a cry baby when people don't believe it.
