I worked with a guy who said he was in the Mekong delta, he retired this past April . As healthy as a horse and strong as a mule, I went to see him a couple of weeks ago . He's a good friend and I miss seeing him every day.....he once told me that he would have to walk in water up to his chin, carrying his rifle over his head for hours at a time. I didn't know how true his stories were, cause he is kinda tall and I thought that a short guy would have been totally screwed.

He wasn't lying....we would spend 3 days on patrol and never get out of ankle deep water. Mekong duty was so extreme we could only spend 2-3 days out there, casualty rates went way up after 3 days. Wading in a swamp for 3 days and nights...

I knew that there was Greatness to be found within those who see this thread and respond. I know a Purple Heart in Texas who flew 40 chopper missions in and out that mess... who was 19 at the time and never had a license to fly. One of the best neighbors I ever had. Agent Orange really took its toll on him. He was landing right in the middle of it and was heavily exposed.

I liberated this from a dead VC after an Artillery strike along the Mekong river. As a medic one of my duties was to check for wounded enemy soldiers and treat any survivors. So I turned over this dead VC (woman) and she had this GI issue .45, it was in better condition than the one I was issued so i kept it ....
