The new mayor of NYC, Bill de Blasio, was sworn in Wednesday by former President Bill Clinton on the frigid steps of the City Hall. He is the first Democrat to hold that position in over 20 years, and he is taking over from the Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who seemed to be more concerned about the size of soda containers, than the growth of poverty in that city, as it soared to new heights under his administration. He seemingly just watched as the numbers of poor increased, and the middle class decline to record highs and lows, respectively. That an acknowledged progressive liberal has been elected by a landslide in the most important city in the world is a telling sign of the future of America, in my opinion. He has promised that one of his most controversial programs will be implemented immediately, which will focus on education. He swore to provide pre-kindergarten opportunities for all students city wide. His method of helping to pay for this program is by adding a luxury tax on the rich, which has been met with the usual Republican rant that it will drive the wealthy from the city. I would like to know where they plan to go, and if they bitch about paying a few dollars more to live in the greatest city in the world, I say let them go, because they don't deserve that honor to be called a New Yorker (I was born in NY so I can say that) It's too bad that Washington doesn't see the urgency as Mayor Bill de Blasio does, but then in that conservative mindset so prevalent in that den of incompetents called Congress, that has been essentially been blocking anything considered progressive for decades. The conservatives state that all you have to do is pull your boot straps up to succeed in this country, even if you don't have the boots, or education to start with. It seems that is going to start to change, where at least in NYC, kids will start on a somewhat equal footing as their wealthy counterparts uptown. Time will tell how it works out, and it might actually succeed as long as the conservatives stay out of the way. Peace
