official GOP debate #1 thread

So why didn`t Kelly ask to talk about this instead of Trump`s colorful commentary ? Where Dems. are losing it......

How do you figure?

Each religion has their own "sacred book" written by man, but inspired by a deity. All these books promote hate or racism in some way shape or form. Have you ever read any passages from the bible? How can you expect an organization of any, to not adhere to the book, that their beliefs and religion were built upon?
Yes, I understand that some religions are more extreme than others. But I am speaking about religion, collectively. I know this is an over the top example, but look at Islam and the loss of civil liberties in countries that practice Sharia law. Do you think Sharia law promotes civil liberties?

And yet none of this proves that religious organizations CAN'T promote civil liberties, and indeed examples abound of where they do exactly that every day.

By your logic, no one should be allowed to own a car because they might use it in a bank robbery.

You asked me "how do you figure" that religion and civil liberties cannot coincide. I just gave you an example of Sharia law. Give me an example where religion promotes civil liberties.(I'll wait around a few hours). Oh, and please don't give me an example of some small church that nobody has ever heard of either.

Do you see Sharia law as the way to promote civil liberties?

You're trying to say that because one religious sect in one place on the planet isn't permitting civil liberties, that none can?

That's silly.

No example of a religion promoting civil liberties, not even one? No, what I am saying is, that civil liberties and religion cannot coincide. You get one or the other. Some, are more extreme than others, all equally delusional.

Hmmm.... I wonder how all tje clergymen in Ferguson would feel reading this statement. They tried to prevent riots by getting protesters to come together in prayer. Or how about the fact that ALL CHURCHES promote our constitutional right to freedom of religion? I mean, those are just some painfully obvious ones.

hoold on there you varmint. The traditional black churches in the south paid in blood during the civil rights movement era of the 50's and 60's.

Mainline Christian churches like Methodist and Congregational all were strong supporters of the civil rights movement during these times. True, their base has eroded and recent evangelist Christianity is attacking civil rights of women and the LGBT community but not all Christianity is represented by them. Here is the stance of the United Church of Christ, a mainline Christian church on gay marriage:

In July 2005, the 25th General Synod [86] encouraged congregations to affirm "equal marriage rights for all", and to consider "wedding policies that do not discriminate based on the gender of the couple." The resolution also encouraged congregations to support legislation permitting civil same-sex marriage rights. By the nature of United Church of Christ polity, General Synod resolutions officially speak "to, but not for" the other settings of the denomination (local congregations, associations, conferences, and the national offices). This Synod also expressed respect for those bodies within the church that disagree and called for all members "to engage in serious, respectful, and prayerful discussion of the covenantal relationship of marriage and equal marriage rights for couples regardless of gender."

It's still up to each church but the organizing body of this church supports gay marriage.

Also, no one church speaks for all Christianity any more than one Mosque is the central body for Islam. I hear what you are saying, religious bigots are the worst. Your brush paints too broadly my friend.
