ONA and carbon filter ain't doin jack!

So i spent all this cash, on a filter, inline fan, and ona. I am in a small apartment. A friend just came over and said the smell of weed is ridiculous in here. Wtf. This shit doesn't work! Humidity is 45% in the tent. tent is 3x3 with 7 small plants in it. 400w hps. I got ona in the kitchen/livingroom. two small containers with a small fan blowing it up into the air. The carbon filter is a 4 inch, the fan is 190cfm, running on 20% power via a dimmer swtich.

Though when he came over i had had the bedroom door (where tent is) open all day because it was too hot in there. I can't smell anythign when I come home except the ona, but I've gone pretty blind to the smell of weed i think.

wtf any tips?

First off, 190cfm is barely pushing through the carbon filter. Each time you open the tent, it will waft out and cramp the fan/tents negative pressure. I would put the ona next to the fan exit. Hose running from the top of the tent to the fan which should be sitting on the filter outside the tent. Then you can put the ona on the floor next to the filter. 20% of 190 cfm is less than 50 cubic foot of air a minute. crank that controller up so your filter is actually scrubbing.

well when i first hooked it up i had it full blast. its a 190 cfm fan, and the filter is rated at 150. so it stunk in here. then i was told the air was moving through the small filter too fast, and wasn't getting scrubbed, so i turned it way down. now i have it at about 60% and i have created negative pressure, the tent is sucking in on itself a decent amount. I also had a side flap open because of heat issues, so i guess a lot of the air was just escaping the tent without being forced through the filter?

Yeah, man the sides sucking in is a good thing. Might want to get a 420cfm and a six inch in the future. 4inch on that space is almost too small if you got a 600w. More air transfer equals lower heat and lower humidity. I work at a hydro store and I almost Never recommend a four inch filter to anyone. More surface area(six inch filter 420cfm) of charcoal helps even if its going slow(but not too slow)

When I was running a basic setup like that, each time I opened the tent it took about half an hour to rescrub the scent and bring my temp level. Best bet is keep that tent closed and if you got a clear window can look at them that way. Smell is a GOOD thing though. Make sure to keep your flower temps under 80 and you'll have the loud

I'm running a 6" fan on a can lite filter and I have 0 smell inside, could smell it outside the house prior to the filter. What kinda filter did you get? The cheaper ones are notorious for not working properly. It's also better to get a slightly bigger sized filter than you need imo.

Also running same size tent as you.

Had my friend come back over today. Had the tent done up good, and ona out in my kichen, he said he couldn't smell it out in the living area but in the bedroom where the tent is, he could def smell it. So after that i put some ona by the exhaust end of the inline fan (i have it sitting on top of the tent) , so i'm not sure how well that worked, but i can smell it when i walk into that room.

Yes, some HPS lights have reflectors that allow air to be drawn through them, which can help keep your tent much cooler when they are vented independently of the air in the tent. If can can vent the light separately, that will reduce the heat in the tent and help take pressure off the required venting through the carbon filter.

Right now i have it set up so that it starts with the carbon filter, then ducting, then the cool tube, then ducting that goes up to the inline fan which sits atop the tent.

If you have another blower, you could run ducting from the outside of the tent, through the light, back outside the tent, through the separate blower. Use the current blower just to run the air exchange and odor control. This should help with reducing temps inside the tent since air needed to cool the light isn't restricted by passing through the filter.

Ducting inside the tent might have pinholes or small leaks wich unscrubbed air can get into without going through the filter first, that was my problem at first

I'd suggest checking duct work for this, and if possible you could attach fan and filter together, then push air through cooltube then out of tent, otherwise you'll need to seal up your ducting with duct tape lol.

And I think they make duct with heatshrink plastic over it, pretty sure that's 100% sealed

So filter>fan>cooltube>out of tent. Right now you have negative pressure inside your duct inside the tent and if you move your fan and attach it to your filter like I've suggested your duct will now have positive pressure, and also and leaks in duct won't leak smell this way since it will be blowing out of the pinhole leaks in the duct after being scrubbed by the filter, hope this mess of a post made sense


Tent will still be negative pressure though

ahh that's too much work lol. i have the plastic shrink wrapped ducting on there now. i think im just going to order a bigger carbon filter. I have a 4 inch now. will i be okay using my 190cfm 4 inch inline fan with an 8 inch filter?

i'm kind of in the same boat as you, i wasn't aware of the ratings on fans when i bought mine, so i got the smallest phresh they make, and its too small. even though my fan is rated lower than the filter, its just not big enough for my tent. so i just got a 6 inch 440 cfm fan and the 6x24 550 cfm phresh filter, i'll be installing it later today, and i'll let you know in a couple of days if it seems to be worth it.
your 190 cfm fan will work for smell, but if you get something closer to 300 cfm it would probably be better for cooling, allowing you to close the tent up more, which helps keep the smell in better, just keeping the bottom flaps open for intake, so the fan doesn't collapse your tent.

It's cuz you got a stinko strain, probably. White Cookies has very little smell. Not all that great a strain overall but it doesn't stink at least. Northern Lights is supposed to be low odor too. Also you can put an air freshener right in front of the fan outlet. I wouldn't use Ona, cuz it does fuckall, but stick a bottle of Air Wick there, not even in the heating thing that plugs in, just the plain bottle. You won't smell nothing but Air Wick, though you may get sick of it. You can partially cover the wick part with some foil or something to reduce the smell.

Another thing is to have an air purifier in the room where the tent is, like a Bionaire, and zip tie a few layers of Aera Max carbon filter pads, the big square ones, over the inlet, and also the front if you want, I do, just one layer on front though. The good thing about the pads is no dust comes from them, unlike carbon grains. You probably have carbon microparticles all over your home right now, and they lodge in your lungs. Probably not a good thing. The grains are alright for outdoor venting but I wouldn't vent inside without some kind of very good filter on it.

yeah man, I'm finding ona to be a little overrated. It does work, but only if you use a shit ton, and I'm not going to waste that amount of money. Got myself an indoor air conditioner yesterday with two hoses on the back, so it sucks in air from outside to cool the a/c and won't be spitting my stinking air outside. Ordered an 8 inch carbon filter, and am going to attach my ducting to my window so I can exhaust the tent air outside. I think I'll be good to go now!

I guess the fact that my air conditioner doesn't spit my stinky air outside is irrelevant now haha, but none the less I can choose when to exhaust my tent air outside now. In the future I might not want to exhaust outside, so good to have that type of a/c
