Optimal DIY LED Setup For Tent

I'm conflicted - and there is just SO much information here, so I'm looking for some guidance

My setup: 2x4x5 grow tent
Growing: 2x 5 gallon DWC (SCROG/LST)

For my tent I was planning on going with Realstyle's LED Panel build however after reading more threads I'm thinking I might be missing something as far as efficiency goes - and I just don't want to leave anything to chance if I'm blowing $700 on a light!

My setup will be used for veg and flower unless someone tells me how stupid of an idea that is - in which case I can do a separate grow cabinet for vegging, as long as it's cheapish (any ideas? I've got 3 AMD heatsink/fans.. )

Am I shooting myself in the foot by doing veg/flower in same tent? I can't find definitive info on here as to the best vegging setup for 2 plants - however I'd love to hear some feedback on this.

do you understand how the efficiency thing works? How many cobs you plan on squeezing on those little amd heatsink?

For a 2X4...8sq/ft you need 8x30w=240w mini
So 5 cxb 3590 3500ºk 36V CD on an hlg-240-1400 would be ok for 450$(250w)
Or 2 hlg-185-1400b and 8 cxb 700$(400w)
I have 3500ºk and it work very well for vegg too...I am sure 5000ºk would be better but it is good enough! (Better than I was expecting)

the hlg240 come out yet? He could still do something more efficient!

One each, I imagine.

Do you think 2 cobs on an AMD heatsink would be enought to veg 2 plants well?

Should I go with a setup more powerful/efficicent? I'm trying to keep costs down which is why I wanted to veg them in the tent however since I'm doing SOG it could get tricky to veg them in there.

yes you can veg with 2 i did with Vero 29 @70w a piece and it worked fine I'm sure you could use less i just built another light for my 2x4x5 tent and i used the 4 cxb3590 on the hlg185 but if i had the money i would have bought more Cree cobs and ran them softer

Any findings or personal experience with vegging with CFLs instead of LEDs? Its probably shit but if it saved me $

I can't find much data on this

It is possible to make a cheap vegg pannel with cheap driver and Vero13!

i get nice veg action using 4 x 105 actual watt 5500°k cfls in a home made hood. you can get the bulbs on Amazon about $12 each. Works great you can easily get 6-8 weeks of veg for 2 plants under this setup. ive vegged 4x 1gal. under it very successfully. let me know if you need a pic. its a very simple hookup using basic home depot parts.

Sounds awesome man, I'd love to see some pics of your setup.

This is another thing I'm debating: how to veg.

I want to have my 2x4x5 tent in continous flower, so I need a way to veg these guys in a small way (gotta fit the veging cabinet in a small space..) to prep them for DWC for flowering.

dwc in a 40 cubic foot tent how much room do you have left? How much after the lights in play?

I use a propagation chamber for clones and mom, then veg/flower in the larger spaces. A space 1.5x3 can be used for propagation or veg with as little as 60 watts and you can DIY that for about $100.

For flowering a 2x4 300-400 watts is ideal IMO, depending on efficiency. 8 CXB 3070 at 1.4 amps would be boss for DIY with (2) HLG-185, or 8 Vero 29 at 1.4 amps with HLG-240 when they are available. For a bit higher efficiency and lower wattage you might consider running either at 1.05 amps using (2) HGL-120 (CXB) or (2) HLG-185 (Vero), and still get some respectable intensity. 8 CXB 3590 at 1.05 amps would be the best of both worlds, high efficiency and excellent intensity.
