Here's the guy that taught me most of what I know about growing, and "Simple Hydroponics" nixes all of the liability that you all are dealing with. I've yet to experience a root problem for the first time in about 4-5 years of growing, My plants all do well in rockwool and grow retardedly fast. I wouldn't go so far as to say DWC fast, but definitely a close second. I could grow without using bennies and be just fine, but I choose to use them because the materials are easy to locate and the teas increase overall performance, plus are very helpful for cloning.
I'm not trying to convert anybody or anything, but if you have a few hours to digest new material, I bet you could transpose a lot of these principles into your preferred grow media. My only argument for using rockwool croutons of any size is that potted plants sit in open air, the space between the cubes holds that air, all while the cubes hold nute water. You have the best of all worlds at all times.
