Pheno Hunting - Long Peaks Blue & Pure Afghan

I received 3 beans each of Long Peaks Blue and Pure Afghan and Im tryin to find a good pheno from the lot.

I dropped the beans in Sunshine #4 with myco. Each bucket is a 13x13" square bucket, approx 5 gallons. These buckets are under a 432w T5 PAR fixture.

Its usually hard to tell a plants traits tell after flowering, harvest, and smoked.... just label clones from each one so you know which smoke is which clone

I agree. Im labelling everything now that Im running two strains and actually going for a strong pheno. With only 3 beans of each though, I will be lucky to get a female of each type.

I have four confirmed sprouts, two of each strain. I think that when I watered the soil mix it might have pushed the seeds down a little further than anticipated. Not an altogether bad thing though, just a little longer sprout time. In the future when the soil continues to compact from the rehydration cycles, the roots will be a bit deeper in the soil and I wont have to add a top mound. Hopefully anyways.

I know Im slow with updates but veg just seems to take forever in dirt.

Ordered the cloner, they are ready to be sexed and have cuts made.

I have 20 gallons of RO water that I mixed with according to the Lucas Formula with added Cal mag (5ml/gal) Sweet Raw (15ml/gal) Pro-tekt (5ml/gal) and Root Starter (2ml/gal). This mix was put into a 55 gallon res. I added a small air pump and 2 air stones for oxygenation. I think I need some pH up, but Ill wait til tomorrow to retest the pH after its properly mixed.

Here are more specifications for the system being ran.

The mothers are in 13"x13" pots (approx 5 gallons) and are currently 12-15" tall. The soil mix is Sunshine #4 with perlite. The mothers are vegging under a 4ft 8x lamp T5 unit running at 432 watts. These lamps are PAR lamps. The veg area is a 4x4x6.5' tent.

When its time to sex, they will be going under a 1000w Hortilux super HPS lamp in the flower area. The flower area is a 4x8x6.5 tent with 2x 1000w lamps. The reflectors are air cooled and being constantly vented. Air is being pulled thru a carbon filter by an 8" vortex 800cfm fan. There are 2x Reptiglo 10.0 UV Booster CFL lamps hovering over the canopy. There are two tower fans vertically suspended to cool the canopy. There are two tower fans resting on the ground, outside of the flood tray of the floor. Eventually, this room will be sealed and enriched with CO2.

The nutrient lineup, 20 gallons RO mixed with nutes in a 55 gal drum. 5w air pump with 2x 10" air stones for oxygenation.

This mix will be pH'd to 6.2 .

I ordered a supercloner 50 site, looks like its gonna take atleast a week to get here. I still need to get a warming mat and temp controller. By the time that gets here, the plants will be ready to sex. Cuttings will be taken (12 of each strain, 9 for flowering and 3 for a new generation of mothers.)

If the mothers are still viable after taking cuts, they can stay in the flower room to be harvested while the cuttings are getting big and strong.

I think that about covers it.

After adding humic acid in with the nutrient solution, it turned it a very questionable color of black. I guess the air stones did a good job mixing everything up, but its shit for (visually) testing the pH via droplets and vial or even litmus paper. The only way to fix this problem long term is to bite the $210 bullet and get the bluelabs combo meter. This will allow me to measure pH, EC, PPM, and water temperature very accurately for years to come. It is also a necessary tool for when I get an RO unit - which will be relatively soon. Clean water for my plants and clean water for myself.. I cant imagine what I have been drinking for years.

Thanks geturgrowon, I try not to get anything shipped to me via USPS. They are slow as dirt and the mailman runs between 3pm and 5pm - which is usually when I need to go to work. The UPS guy is here between 12pm and 1230pm every single time. I really like using amazon prime for this reason.

I ordered the Blue Lab combo meter and a 6 stage RO unit with a UV lamp for sterilization. I remember one time last year when our citys water was contaminated with e. coli and some other nasty stuff. Had black stuff coming out of the tap. From now on I will always have a source of contaminant free water for myself and my plants. Price tag? About $445 total and worth every penny.

No pic updates yet, but they are certainly getting big. I need to raise the lights tomorrow or the next day.

Cloner isnt still here yet, but the Bluelab meter is.

I calibrated it and the nutrient solution read:

only measured ppm: 120

Pretty happy with the stuff I bought and installed myself, I doubt the RO water is really 0ppm though.

Considering that the pH reads 6.5, I thought I was going to have to raise it so I am going to leave it as it is. However, I will be diluting the nute solution 50/50 with fresh RO water to cut the ppms in half.

Cloner is FINALLY on its way. If you order ANYTHING from Supercloset, expect it to take a month to get to your house.

Not much has been going on in the veg room except for excessive growth. I will be putting the plants into 12/12 and train them under a scrog screen tomorrow. By the time the cloner is here, I will already know the sex of the plants and I can cull the males and take cuts from the females.

I ordered a second 55gal barrel for RO water storage. I am only filling the barrels with 20-30 gallons to avoid too much weight in one location. 50 gallons of water weighs around 425 lbs lol.

Veg shots are pretty boring, but they are happy, healthy, and huge.

Cloner will be here tomorrow, I will be putting it together and getting the nute solution pHd the way I want it. I am thinking 100ppm pHd to 6.0

Since there is only ~10ppm in the RO water, it will be ~90ppm of nutes.

Meanwhile, the plants are in day 6 of 12/12 without showing any determinable sex. I am really hoping for some females.. so far I am doubtful. Cuts may not even be ready to take until saturday or sunday. Most likely, since the plants are 24-30" tall, I will have to hack off a good part of the main stem to reduce its height. This will allow the undergrowth to really stretch up and want to work at the screen and be easier to train. It will also allow for enough cuts to be taken to continue the strains.

The only piece of equipment that I am missing is the inline pump.

I decided to take a swing at coco coir. I ordered 5x 5kg of dried coco at my local shop along with dolomite lime pellets, and picked up a big bag of coarse perlite.
1tbsp pelletized dolomite lime per gallon of mix.. at 65L per 5kg of coco brick, thats 325L / 3.78 = 85.978 , = 86 gallons of mix, 86 tbsp * 14.78ml = 1271.08 , 1271ml / 30ml(fl oz) = 42.366 , 42oz. / 8oz (cup) = 5.25 cups dolomite lime mixed into 86 gallons of mix. Bingo

86 * .25 (perlite) = 21.5gal * 3.78 = 81.27L of perlite required.

It turns out all six of these plants were males. Extremely disappointing, but luckily my "supplier" is a stand-up guy and will be gifting me a Walker Kush teen to veg a little more and have for a mother plant. Might have a couple cuts of the LPB and Pure Afghan in a couple weeks too, but he is getting me started for now.

I dont think I can recall a single time where I have been this disappointed about growing. I have had pests, pH/lockout issues, environment issues, and catastrophic equipment failure.. but in those instances I have always been able to pick up the mess and get something decent at the end. Still.. I will not let it dampen my efforts to doing what I love to do.

With new equipment, new genetics, and a sharpened mind I am ready to get this going. Stay tuned for a link to my next grow

light spectrum can have a lot to do with male outcome, if i were you, I would re-look into it and make sure the lights you are flowering with help encourage female production
