Growing vegetables under artificial light is a BAD deal for the environment. Even shipping in off-season produce from across the globe is way, way better than growing them indoors.

There is a great talk by Bruce Bugbee about that issue:
My veggie are grown outside, compost alone is 400 a load. 40 a yd plus delivery I’m almost a grand in before I sow or transplant a single thing

I’m in central NY with national grid fucking me right on the ass also. I’m paying $500-$550 a month with my 4 (700w bar lights) 2 hlg 550 and 2 t5 at 300w each for veg

You can grow the veggies hydroponically instead. It is the artificial light that is the problem, not the compost or the mineral nutrients.
