I was driving my car a few hours ago with a friend and his girlfriend when I got pulled over by a local cop. We hadn't been smoking which is great so we weren't greeting the officer with bloodshot eyes and smelly clothes, but my friend did have a half oz of the goodstuff with him and it was pretty smelly.
I saw the cop pull out behind me as I drove down a mainstreet and follow me for a bit from a distance, so I turned into a residential area and drove a couple more blocks, just as I was about to turn onto another side street the cop barrels around the corner accelerates like mad and turns his lights/siren on. As soon as I saw him come around the corner I had instructed my friend to put the sack under the seat, roll up his window and let me do the talking.
When the cop came over I rolled down the window about four inches and before he spoke I politely asked why I had been pulled over, he said I had speeding and asked for my DL and insurance.. (never bothered with registration.. guess thats old school?). The second officer took my two friends DL's. When the cop came back to the car he asked me to step outside and "have a chat with him". So he positioned me in front of his cruiser and gave me my ticket. I thought things were good to go but then he started trying to ask me all sorts of questions. "Anything illegal in the car? You have anything on you? How 'bout your friends, they got anything? Do you like to smoke a little weed? (Yes he really asked me that..) How 'bout your friends, they smoke?" I responded with simple negative responses to all the officers questions, "no theres nothing in the car, no I have nothing on me, no my friends dont have anything" etc...
Then he tryed to weasel into my car with the classic "So if nothing's in the car, mind if I have a look to make sure everythings ok?" I had rehearsed being pulled over many times in my head.. specifically how to answer this question. I politely, but very assertively said "Officer, I do not consent to any searches". BAM. All he replied was "Well that's your right" I asked if I was free to go, and he said that I was. So I got in, buckled up and was home free.
To a lot of you this might seem like pretty normal, everyday crap. This was only the second time I have ever been pulled over, so I was trying not to be intimidated, but also I knew that we had goods on us that, if convicted of, would get my car impounded, get me kicked from school, bar me from recieving any more financial aid (effectively ending my college career), stop my from ever holding the job that I'm going to school for and potentially cost me my freedom.
Lastly, I just wanted to plug a video I saw on YouTube called "Flex Your Rights" I actually viewed it because of a suggestion from a poster on this forum some time ago. The video walks you through traffic stops, using your rights and not letting the officer trample all over you. I have watched the video three times preparing for the worst, and today I put that knowledge to a real world test. I got a speeding ticket.. But I'm at home right now smoking a bowl and chatting to you guys because I flexed my rights. Watch the vid if you get a chance... Seriously..
