Theres no real way to protect these sites as theres an almost infinite number of dodo's out there wanking on damaging somebody elses stuff .

Honestly, I'm not that mad about the hack itself. That can happen. As long as they kept the forum software updated they were doing their job.
The old backup does show their lazyness, or lack of expertise, though. There's no reason for them not to do at least a weekly backup. Heck you can set up a cron job and not worry about it again.
