Did you find any more carbon? From what I have been reading around is that aquarium shops are going to have the size you need. And they say the finer the better.
New Ideas:
1. With the smell you can get "ona Gel" to cover the smell 2. get a small personal fan about 3" and put it on the inside but point it to the filter you are making, it would just add 50 cm or so. 3. LINK --->
https://www.rollitup.org/grow-room-design-setup/80712-pc-fan-respirator-filter-works.html I think its kinda like what you are talking about but a little diff.
Nah I didn't.
I got what I had from the local pet store, its all they had. Two 200g boxes.
Yea, you want fine over the large macaroni sized pellets. Its just liek for vaporizing, you want it fine (ground up) so that there is more surface area for contact.
However, you dont wan't it too fine....as just like for vaporizing....if its too fine.....when you pull air through, it packs too tightly and restricts airflow.
So, you want it fine (granules), but not too fine.
When using PC fans like I am.....which are not very good when faced with an obstruction.... ie they have low static pressure.....using too fine a grain size will render thses fans useless
As what happend when I first put my filter on........the bed thinkness of the carbon was just too thick (inch maybe guessing)....and barely any air was coming through.
I did what I said a post or two ago....and cut one screen to match the diameter inside the 120mm housing.
Reinforced the outside of the screen with cut pieces of metal clothes hangers ....because the screen wasnt rigid enough and was bulging out when I would put carbon in (when I'd stand it up carbon would fall out of place in the screen because of the space created from the bulging)
refilled with a thin layer of carbon and put the cut screen on top and got it secured with morepieces of hanger and some tape. and put it back on today.
It seems to be working much better. The temps didnt go back to 25-26 but they are hovering around 29-31c with the lid on for an hour+ .... but this is also the tub sitting in the room and not in the cupboard (26ish degrees in the cupboard with no filter and 2 30w cfls)
When I first put the filter on it was at 33+c
I can also feel air being sucked into the intake (although lightly) when I wet my hand (when I first did the filter I could not feel anything)
I also feel more air when I put my wet hand against the filter now.
So obviously, it has incresed the airflow a bit which is good.
I'd love to have it at 25-26 all the time but hell this thing sits in a closed (not sealed) cupboard so I can't expect it to be totally cool all the time.
Plus summers reach 35+c outside, so i'm sure that the little ones can take 30-31c as long as they are looked after and kept from drying out.
My tub isn't fully "sealed" too....so i'm sure if I sealed the little cracks around the pvc and put weather stripping along the rim of the tub to completely seal the lid when its on, that temps might drop a "tad" more.
Heres what I got in terms of the carbon.....you can see its really small. I put the dime there so you can tell just how small the grains are.
Theres different sizes in there too....when I fill the filter....i shook it a bit and small grains were falling through the screen so its not all the same size....you can tell just by looking at it.
I just need some that is just a little bigger then what I got. I just dont want to have to buy 10-20lbs of it just so I can get the size I want.
I may try to put even less carbon as I dont think I need as much as I even got now. when you think about it....filters that are 2+ feet long and 4-6 inch diameter only have a carbon bed thinkness of maybe 2 inches. and thats using 200-400+ cfm fans.
I'm using like a 35-40max cfm fan...so I'm hoping that as long as I cover the screen with a thin layer that it should still work and remove smell.
I guess well find out and see if I decide to try a thinner layer.
I could care less if it nees to be refilled somewhat often.....If I need to refill it once a week because I start smelling it....then so be it. It takes all of a couple min.
I'm sure this will last long enough that I wont have to refill toooooo often. It would soon get annoying lol
I'd be fine with having to do it once a month if that means I can grow shit for myself stealthly lol
