since masons were not just the guys who built walls and castles, but also the guys who were hired to tear them down in wars, they were in demand. their secret society helped to ensure their freedom to move, operate and be paid, as well as protecting them from accusations of witchcraft, pagan knowledge, and un-christian study.
Protip: secret societies still exist, youll never hear of most of them, and most of them are not criminal syndicates

The Freemason's were a sect started for the building of the pyramids to glorify Set (Seth, Thoth, or Typhon). The Freemason predate Christianity by about a thousand years or more. The Freemason symbol is even an upside down pentagram. This isn't anything secret or a conspiracy.

every fraternity on every college campuus will regale you with a glorious tale of the ancient founding of their noble order (even if they started in the 80's)
the free masons guild started in western europe (probably france or england) during the latter half of the dark ages.
since they are a SECRET society much of their real history is well, secret, so secret they dont even remember, and most of the shit they will tell you is pure horse shit.
edit: and their symbol is a transit and a builder's square, the basic tools of the mason.
just like leather aprons, spades trowels, etc etc, all used in their dopey rituals because they started out as medieval STONE MASONS not ancient egyptian philosopher priests.

thats right, they STARTED as a trade guild for masons, and became a drinking society for well heeled gentlemen who needed a place to get away from their wives.
when the skills of the engineer (thats what stonemasons were) became a skill you learned at a university instead of from an apprenticeship, and printing presses turned knowledge into a freely traded commodity, the mason's guild became redundant. so they tirned into a social club.
i can see where this would be perplexing as fuck to you, but it aint to anybody else.
