Sevren's Testing Garden

Been awhile since I've done one of these. So now that I'm in a stable place, the testing garden can continue. I'll use this thread to keep updates on all grows and testing equipment.

So this is where I am now. The tent got a nice bump in height, but still a 4x2 space. Still using Area 51 RW-75's for vegging purposes. About to overhaul the COB bar from a over-heated vinyl fence post with 6 arctic's, 6 LPC-60-1400's and 6 CXA's. To a much more manageable single H-USA 40" heatsink with dual HLG-185h-c1400's and 4 CXA's and 3 CXB's with ledil reflectors. But, more on that later. And a shiny new XP-Lighting 300W induction grow light to test as well.

This testing period is mostly Bodhi strains with a GPS strain thrown in there, also based on another Bodhi strain. Here's what we got:

GPS - 2x Pura Vida x Polar Bear OG
Bodhi - 2x Blue Dream x Apollo 11
2x Afgooey x Dragons Blood

The seeds just popped a few days ago, with one blue dream x a11 taking its sweet ass time popping. Always gotta be that one....

Yeah these future ladies are under two RW-75's right now. The induction lamp will be used when I transplant them to their 3 gallon pots. Then after a week or two of that, hopefully my new COB bar will be finished being built and I'll switch them out. Right now I only have one tent and kind of have to play musical chairs to test things out. At some point (soon), I'd like to setup another, albeit smaller tent, for the induction lamp to hang on its own. But, that's a whole other host of environmental issues I have to figure out.

Extremely...long..over due update. My light project is complete, finally, it only took, well, since the last update here. Better late than ever. Below is a 7 COB bar 40" long with a mix of old and new. Four of my previous CXA 3070 AB's and 3 new CXB's. A CXB 3070 3500k AD on each end, and a CXB 3070 4000k BB in the middle. I really wanted to mix match the 4000k with the 3000k, but, finding the CXB 4000k BB was a pain so, 3500k it is. Plant update to follow.

And now for plant updates. The Apollo/Blue Dream was my only female the first round, so she ended up vegging while another around of seedlings sprouted, sexed, vegged and were ready to flip. Now she's gigantic, and struggling to stay alive. Great fun.

The Afgooey on the left and Pura Vida in the center are doing just fine, hopefully they blow up under their new light.

Weekly update-
What I thought might be some light bleaching, turns out might just be a deficiency, leaning towards Mag. On closer inspection I'm thinking possibly calcium/magnesium. Can I get a second opinion/confirmation?

Weekly update- A plea for help

First time I've experienced this and I suppose there's a first time for everything, but my Afgooey is stunted in mid flower. I thought it was just slow, but it's day 50 and they looks about the same as day 30. I can't tell what the problem might be so, help? Someone? Bueller?

The Pura Vida has the same deficiency but is handling it much better and still gaining some weight albeit a bit slower as well.

And the Apollo 11 x Blue Dream is coming down this week as she is floppy, dreamy and pretty much faded out.

I'm thinking too much ferts has caused excess potassium and that locked out magnesium. Look at the tips, that's usually excess nitrogen from too much feeding and green veins, classic magnesium problem.

From Wikipedia:
Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is a detrimental plant disorder that occurs most often in strongly acidic, light, sandy soils, where magnesium can be easily leached away. Magnesium is an essential macro nutrient found from 0.2-0.4% dry matter and is necessary for normal plant growth.[1]

Excess potassium, generally due to fertilizers, further aggravates the stress from the magnesium deficiency,[2] as does aluminium toxicity.[3]

Magnesium has an important role in photosynthesis because it forms the central atom of chlorophyll.[1] Therefore, without sufficient amounts of magnesium, plants begin to degrade the chlorophyll in the old leaves. This causes the main symptom of magnesium deficiency, chlorosis, or yellowing between leaf veins, which stay green, giving the leaves a marbled appearance. Due to magnesium’s mobile nature, the plant will first break down chlorophyll in older leaves and transport the Mg to younger leaves which have greater photosynthetic needs. Therefore, the first sign of magnesium deficiency is the chlorosis of old leaves which progresses to the young leaves as the deficiency continues.[4] Magnesium also is a necessary activator for many critical enzymes, including ribulosbiphosphate carboxylase (RuBisCO) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), both essential enzymes in carbon fixation. Thus low amounts of Mg lead to a decrease in photosynthetic and enzymatic activity within the plants. Magnesium is also crucial in stabilizing ribosome structures, hence, a lack of magnesium causes depolymerization of ribosomes leading to pre-mature aging of the plant.[1] After prolonged magnesium deficiency, necrosis and dropping of older leaves occurs. Plants deficient in magnesium also produce smaller, woodier fruits.

Thanks @FranJan . This is what I get for using free ferts and not reading up on them. Looks like she'll be getting a heavy flush tomorrow and then the Pura Vida. Now I just have to read up on the best course of action after. Epsom salts, cal-mag or just ease back on the ferts.

Yeah Sev I switched nutes last year and it was ugly plant city at first . Ended up going back to Blue Mountain Organics this year but added Marine Cuisine and biodynamic compost teas with EM-1 and worm castings and so far so good though I'm still tweaking it.

Well if you flush then the lockout should be fixed so light feeding with a small dose of Epsom would be my choice. My thing is are the roots OK and is the PH acceptable so to me a compost tea has to be included to try to reduce plant stress. Fresh castings and maybe a top dressing before watering. Figuring out what to do can be a big a pain in the ass as figuring out what's wrong :). But if she's drinking then her roots and the PH should be OK, right?

Marine cuisine?! say it ain't so froggy...............mixing synthetics/organics is a no no IMO, don't care what FF says

I do agree however that a flush/foliar application would help..............maybe:wink:

Yeah it was interesting/weird as they looked great during veg and the first 3-4 weeks of flower. Green, stacking, bulking, and then just went to shit even though I was following the exact regiment the ferts outlined. Should have known when it said increase this, decrease this, now add these two things; shit was going to burn up.

Flushing with a slightly higher PH, just to be sure. I've been in the 6.2 to 6.5 range, going to bump it up to 6.8-7.0 for a flush. So I think the roots are ok. Luckily I have some castings and teas on hand, so I can immediately apply those after the flush.

IDK, I use 2 tablespoons in 10 gallon pots so I don't see it wiping out my herd wholesale if at all. Got sick of Flower Tone, better for outdoors/beds and if it doesn't stink it's probably "dead". BMO is good for people who want to reuse soil like me but it's easy to overnute, (Yes Virginia there is.... :)), when trying to fix something. I've always been organic based but I've never considered myself organic. I only use Biodynamic Compost because I hate humping that bag of Ancient Forest around NYC :) and not because it's infused with the spirits or whatever holistic bullshit, though I do like that mine comes from Africa and was buried in some dead animal's horn for 5 years. Or something like that :).

And P what do you think of EM-1? Snakeoil or the real deal? I took a chance and I gotta say my compost teas explode and my soil smells amazing ever since I've been using it. Been seeing a lot more activity in my soil bin. I mean people are using it for everything and loving it. I'm thinking of brewing some like they show you.

Long time no update, but I'm hoping someone can help me identify a complication of sorts. I'm in the throes of late vegging on this sativa-ish looking phenotype of Grease Monkey, and I can not tell what is going on with the sex of this plant. I sexed all my plants to cull the males, and I could have sworn that I found pistils (hairs) coming from a calyx on this plant before revegging it. Now, I see a lot of what I think are calyxes on the plant, in the right places, the right shape, but not one has any pistils showing. Is this normal? Mutant? Late bloomer? Or do I have a ladyboy ? I've up-potted my other two plants, this is the last holdout, but I'm reluctant to up-pot a potential male.
