Sexing at germination

well i guess thats were we bump heads.. ive never felt the need to have or display an "attitude" in a forum... when i said

"sheesh its just a forum, dont get ya panties in a twist"

i wasnt referring to the people in the room wearing panties... its only a phrase... i didnt mean to offend the ladies in the room

All im saying is, everything i say is all in good fun.. i would never let a website get me the least bit frustrated or angry.. we're all very good at what we do, and we all have a broad outlook on our opinions and how we do things... sorry if i offended anybody, i'd hate to be the "jackass of RIU"
attitude promotes emotional response.

This thread is an experiment, valid or not, it's an experiment and arguing and such will throw it off topic, just like 90% of any forum thread.

And thanks for the info email, I'll pickup that botany book, because when you have knowledge about the plant and its actual biology, botany, and inner workings, it inevitably leads to a better grower in my opinion :D

But I still stand by what I said before -- No one really knows if Males or Females output more auxin than the other, so I still thing this myth is valid, in a sense.

Also, I don't know if this is true, but I heard it, maybe someone can inform me a bit more. Is it true the Cannabis plant is the only plant in the world that displays visible signs of sex + male / female plants are distinctively different from each other without looking in the genetics. If this is the case, it's strange that the plant is like this, and it might make you think that the plant was seeded here from "someone else".

Of my 12 seeds, 9 germinated, 5 straight, 3 curled, 1 got tossed with other 4 (gave it one more day, wasnt looking good). As of right now, 3 straight root has sprouted, 1 curled has. The others i see growing, but are having trouble poking up. They look stuck, and im going to give em 3 more days before i chuck those...

BTW: Lavender bagseed, idk sativa/indica domince...

see - this is where we disagree. to my mind, an invalid experiment is worthless. in fact, it is worse than worthless it is detrimental - you'll prove nothing and potentially continue to perpetuate a myth.

but until we get our beloved plant legalized and real scientists/botanists can conduct tightly controlled experiments we are stuck floundering around.

they don't have these basic growing kind of arguments on orchid forums.

I just started to germinate 5 seeds dont know what kind they are but I will definetly look for the signs of curling...Some of those old timers know what they are talking about...So dont knock them...
Word. I'm getting ready to germ another ten as well, and will be looking for this. :)

Are you saying there is actual sexual dimorphism demonstrated in Cannabis? If so.. well, that's a real heel knocker.

Hehheh.. this lady doesn't mind the term, and she uses it herself. You really want to see people get their knickers in a knot? Try passing off the 'don't get your panties in a bunch' on certain biker forums. DAMN but that pisses some guys off!

Orchids arent half as precious as mary joo wanna... :blsmoke:

I agree tho, science has stumped this experiment...

And you guys probably dont even know how to conduct a "real" experiment.. you need a control and then like 3 or 4 experiments.. For example... Lets say you wanna test this experiment, you would need to have a set of all curled roots, a set of str8 roots, and then a set of an even mixture... this way the experiment can either agree or disagree with your hypothesis... i dont think any of you are dedicated enough to conduct that kind of experiment... we're talkin like 15 seeds, all from the same strand, and all grown under the SAME conditions... Like email said, its fun to play around with, but until a "defined" experiment is conducted, science wins this debate...

Empirical evidence can lend a good deal of credibility. Who are you including in the "you guys probably don't"?

Well put!!!!!
I think this thread/concept/idea/folk lore has a bit of merit.
A poll would/could work well.

Some options I'd like to add:
Strain
Pure Sativa/Indica/Ruder
Or % of mix
Fem seeds or 'reg'
Bank/Bag/home bred seeds.

It may be folk lore or some merit. Lets see.
If its shown that 85% of straight will be male, then that can help the big grower. For a smaller grower, keeping an extra plant in the mix probably wont suck up that much more effort.

But then 24/0 light will make them plants more male. etc.
(of course thats the battle between genetics vs. environment debate. I still feel environment makes a hermie, genetics is core sex)

i was looking through this thread and i don't think i communicated my thinking very well.

I am all for the experiment - my cautions were against drawing the wrong conclusions and the likelihood of bias since it will be difficult to control.

my concern rested with starting an experiment trying to "prove" something rather than going where the evidence leads.

I see where ya comin' from Email, most people here don't know how to conduct a proper science experiment, and from everyone's results, people will get excited over some standard results that may be faulty with a large percentage of error ( wrong labels on plants, not enough plants grown, confused on what "curled" means, weather its completely curled, or slightly crooked, etc. etc. ). But, you're right in a sense. Since science can't yet prove this, I think we may have a pretty deeeceeentttt experiment going on, as long as everyone follows some set of standard guidelines. With all these people contributing ( 50+ plants ), there's bound to be some results, and I'm curious to see what happens.

Off the bat, from what i've read, its highly unlikely... but threw this we can weed out some other variables and maybe spark an idea that will lead to the discovery of the infamous Y gene. One thing i thought of while reading the geotripism thing is infact the whole laying on the side. Well sure, that weeds out top or bottom. But then inside the seed the embryo could be facing differently, but from the geotrip thingy, it would however stand that they would all need to point to one center direction.... no?

i dunno but I germed and planted some seeds...i am gonna do three more that germed today but here is what I have so far...btw the other three I have also have curled tap roots...so if one of them comes out male then it's all out the window for me as far as I am concerned...I should be doing at least 20 seeds for viable results but if the lore holds true then 20 isnt really needed is it...we shall see...i will keep up the results for you guys to follow along with....here are the pics

Whow Back the Joint up a second. By "someone" are you suggesting ALIENS planted weed on Earth!!??

okay....so here is my official statement about this before this actually produces results....just so you dont all think I am dumb for doing this.....I personally think it will fail...but

I believe that...the tap root is curled or not curled based on the resistance to growth exhibited by the germinating medium....that is my call...maybe it is just common sense but hell...we will see...lol...I have em growin right now
