Anybody do a cover crop on their SIPs? Gonna get mine growing again as it is tent season for me. Covers are kind of a pain imo and I don’t want my soil exposed so thought maybe a cover crop would be neat. I used coir tops on my last grow (not sip) and didn’t mind them either.

I tried a cover crop once, wasn't good at it. Rather than developing that skill, I opted for black plastic to keep soil moist and break the gnat cycle. Helps retain heat under an LED, too.

I used to run no till in an earthbox. I would do a cover crop after harvest, let it grow out a bit.... Screenshot_20241104_084111_Gallery.jpg

Then chop and drop, a lil before transplant of the new round.......Screenshot_20241104_084237_Gallery.jpg

Do the roots grow deep enough? Or am I missing the mark? Or is the soil in all just at the appropriate place where the plant life up top can take advantage of them?

That my friend is beautiful and very satisfying. Nice job. What is that cover and how long does it take to establish?

I really only suggest it, if you're doing no till.

On my current grow I'm using a thick layer of cannabis leaves as mulch and it seems to help keep the top soil moist.

A cover isn't really that bad with a SIP since you'll (hopefully) rarely be touching it. In the past I've used a piece of panda film with a slit cut in it, so it can just slide on and off, and then clipped to the edges of the container. It's easy enough to pull it off and top-dress if needed.

I am using leaves as mulch this go round. Got 3 Strawberry Milk & Qookies and 3 pre 98 episode one autos from night owl and then the sip with 2 plants are the freebie Green Crack autos that came with them from North Atlantic seeds. I have not run autos in probably 10+ years so still on a learning curve and I think I might have triggered them too early. Next time I will plant into root riots and then put them directly into the SIP and try to not over water and see if that works better. 4x4 tent build a soil coots mix recipe and build a soil line up of weekly supplements. Timber Magnolia 4 light.
