Cigarette smoke is sticky, look at the way it clings to the paint on ceilings of smokers houses or old oil paintings and if you do smoke in there often enough it will cling to the leaves and reduce their ability to breathe and utilise your growing environments humidity etc.
Nicotine is a poison, hence why you shouldnt handle seeds if you've been smoking, without washing your hands.

Nicotine is a poison, but I don't think it hurts plants. It's a defense mechanism to discourage pests to the plant (though some have adapted to be immune).

The real reason you don't want to smoke in the grow room, or really go into the grow room after smoking without a good vigorous hand washing, is that the Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) can jump species to a number of other plants like tomatoes and marijuana, where it is very destructive.

You can smoke TMV positive tobacco all day and not have a single problem yourself, but you carry it on your skin from the particulate in the smoke. And since it's not remotely harmful to humans, there's no regulation in the Tobacco industry about whether their products came from plants that had the virus.

If your plants get TMV, it'll spread quickly and the only way to get rid of it is to chop the plants and sterilize everything in the room.

I'm sorry, but that's simply retarded.

Have you ever been in a room so well vented you couldn't smell when someone lit up next to you?

Have TMV jump from your tobacco to your plants ONCE. You'll change your tune.

Do. Not. Smoke. In. Your. Grow. Room.

Hell, if you want to be safe never go into your grow room after smoking without scrubbing your hands like a surgeon.

Is it worth your entire crop just to try to prove everyone wrong?

I vote, no smoking in the grow room. Tobacco does carry plant viruses, which can hurt Mary. Plus it does dirty up your grow room.
.
I vote yes on hand washing, and for no name calling. Everyone, is intitled to their opinion. The purpose of forums is to stimulate discussion and sharing of ideals and opinions - Not to Dog each other out.......cause that is Stupid....

Well there hasn't been any name calling. This is a common misconception among many people - they believe that their ideas and their statements are the same thing as themselves. Smart people have stupid ideas. And doing or saying something stupid doesn't make you less intelligent.

Nor does illustrating someone else's stupid idea make your illustration any kind of judgment of them. Nowhere did anyone say "this is a stupid idea and you're stupid to have said it" because that wasn't the case.

When people become so enamored with their own ideas that they cannot bear criticism of those ideas they become self-destructive. I don't particularly enjoy having my mistakes pointed out, but I would much rather have them pointed out before I make them than afterwards.

that's simply retarded.
See, both statements are not directed at people. They're directed at "that" - a pronoun not used to indicate a human unless you're being particularly insulting by insinuating that the person is also genderless.

Say I grew an ugly plant. If someones says "that's ugly" they're not telling me that I'm ugly. They're talking about my plant. That might offend me a little because hey, I grew it and it turned out ugly, but it's still true and I have to own up to that. I've grown lots of ugly plants. I'm not proud of it, but it's the truth and I'm not going to take offense if someone knows the truth.

Smoking in the grow room is a stupid idea. It simply is. Suggesting that it is okay - especially after someone has very clearly explained why it's not - is not a very bright thing to do. It doesn't make you a bad person, it just makes it bad advice.

In this case it was important to make it abundantly clear that the advice was bad and should not be followed.
