I’m new here but I’ve been doing a ton of research and was hoping some people could give some advice on ventilation in a southern garage.

I have a 20x20 partially-insulated 2 car attached garage in Florida. It unfortunately doesn’t have a door or window besides the main garage door. Obviously ambient temperatures run high as well as humidity. My main questions stem from needing an inconspicuous way to exhaust through my garage door or roof. I own the home but want as little damage as possible so the roof option scares me. I can’t easily vent into my attic space without causing damage or intake from there with it being so hot. Also, I live in an area with an HOA and it makes me nervous to be leaving my garage door up in any capacity.

I am looking into putting in a mini split because the portable AC units have a bad rep and also add to my exhaust issues. I don’t have the option of a window unit and my homes air conditioning unit is only 2 tons for 1,460 sq.ft. so leaving a door open or adding a vent from my main unit into the garage would cause the rest of my home to run warm.

Growing 20-24 plants in 5 or 7 gallon buckets of organic soil. Planning to use a 10x10 Tent. (4) 1000W Bestva Full Specteum LED Lights that go up to 780nm. An 8 inch AC Infinity Carbon Filter plus a AC Infinity CLOUDLINE T8 Inline Duct Fan 807 CFM with remote (for humidity and temperature) for exhausting heat. Inside the tent i’ll have multiple 16 inch oscillating fans hung above (2-4) and a Lasko 4930 Tower fan on the ground. I’ll probably use pot elevators to help with air flow. I’ll also be using a 6 inch 442 CFM Inline Duct Fan for air intake at the bottom of the tent which would either need to pull air from garage or outside. Outside air is very warm so I don’t think this is a feasible option. I plan to purchase a dehumidifier If needed too.

I’ve seen people put up a wall and create an open room with no tent but I don’t have much knowledge on this topic. I do plan to upgrade lighting in the future and insulate the garage door at least. I have barely started to dive into the addition of CO2 but have some cheaper options like exhale bags, the grow bro CO2 generator, the green pad, CO2 air forced buckets, etc. any advice on this as well is welcome.

**The alternative to grow in a spare bedroom is optional but not favorable because of size and loosing a guest bedroom isn’t good. We’d have to reduce our grow size as a whole and I’d rather have the privacy of the garage.

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this and respond!

First of all welcome. Secondly, without the ability to exhaust out of the room the plants are in, it’s gonna be pretty difficult to control the environment. I had a friend run wood across the bottom of his garage door in order to keep the door open so he could vent out the fabricated exhaust hole. His garage didn’t have a side door or windows either. This was the only way he could transition his garage into his grow area. He however didn’t have to worry about any HOA, so any adjustments or additions to your house will be heavily scrutinized. I’m sure someone will have an idea, but without drilling holes or creating something to vent out, I have no idea how to do it, sorry.

Thank you for that suggestion. My Father-in-law does air conditioning for a living and he suggested using the bottom of the garage door area as well. Would cutting a hole in the actual garage door and placing a white colored grille vent there that I exhaust through be more or less obvious in your opinion?? Maybe I could place a potted plant nearby and park on that side to distract. I’m on a corner lot and my garage is on the street side so it’s not directly next to any neighbors.

Insulation is your friend if growing in a garage.

A mini split is the way to go for cooling. Go with a sealed CO2 enriched grow using AC and dehumidification. Carbon scrubbers to take care of odor. Generally building a room inside the garage that is well insulated is a good way to go.

Thank you for the info. What would your suggestion be for supplementing CO2 in a 10x10 grow tent? I’ve seen people use mushrooms and other various methods.

Depends, a grow tent would need to be air conditioned so it won't exhaust any air. Dehumidification will also be required as the biomass increases. If you have all that lined out then you can likely use a CO2 tank and regulator connected to a fuzzy logic CO2 controller.

My friend that grew in the garage had insulation, and while it did help with keeping the outside heat from getting in, he didn’t have a choice but to exhaust out of the room otherwise he was just recirculating the same air.

cO2 is kind of pointless if you’re not running a closed system. All you end up doing is exhausting your cO2 right out of the room.

I have had this same issue, except I live in the Midwest. This is my first grow and didn’t want to use up a bedroom either. So to the garage I went. I have a nosy hoa and my town requires a permit for everything and a heater/ac combo brought too much attention in my opinion. So I bought a 4 1/4 hole saw and drilled the side of my garage and put a dryer vent in. I have a Tee connector at the end so I can exhaust my tent and ac. I’m using a 12,000 btu portable Ac from lg and it’s been doing good so far. Good luck and I hope this info helps even a little.

That actually makes a lot of sense. How do you access and maintain your plants with that much CO2 in the tent? If you open it doesn’t it all escape and I heard you can easily get sick from it without realizing. I’m also concerned with the cost of running CO2 with a year round grow. I’m pushing it as it is with electrical cost of everything else being added. Overall I’d have to wait to implement this into a grow. I do hear you get amazing results from added CO2 though.

I plan to air conditioning the area outside the tent and pull cool air in through an intake fan. My plans were for an open system so obviously I realize CO2 would be a waste at this point. Thank you for the brand suggestion though!

Drilling a hole through my garage wall scares me more than drilling through the roof for some reason. My father-in-law offered this as an option though. He suggested a 6 inch hole and my garage is pure thick concrete block. He said it would be difficult to do. I have the same HOA issues you’re experiencing. I was wondering if i could incorporate my AC & exhaust through one hole so that’s good you’ve had success with it. I might go with a portable to start and upgrade to a mini split once i have more funds. The issue with this is i can’t pull a permit and have it installed by a company or I’d have to tear down my grow for the install. A lot to consider! This info was definitely helpful, thank you!

How large is your grow and what do you see in terms of cost for running a CO2 system. What system do you use to supply CO2??
My grow is pretty good sized. I use natural gas CO2 generators in my flowering rooms, autopilot environmental controllers. You can see my grow here:

Hi my rooms are 5x5 in my garage and I live in a HOA community. Both of my 4” intakes comes from inside the house and exhaust outside.

Hopefully this pics can give you an idea.

happy growing
