"psst hey Vi, those guys said realtors are even more crooked than politicians or car salesmen"
A September 11, 2003 New York Times article shows that President Bush proposed the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago. His proposal: An agency within the Treasury Department to supervise mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Fearing that mortgages would no longer be available to people who were unable to pay them back, Democrats eventually killed the proposal. The current meltdown in the mortgage industry is a direct result of giving mortgages to people who could not pay them back, a practice protected by Congressional Democrats.
These two entities Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are not facing any kind of financial crisis, said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.
Representative Melvin L. Watt, Democrat of North Carolina, agreed.
I dont see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing, Mr. Watt said.
This is directly responsible for the credit crisis which the evil business' required to stay in business.
But lets chant some slogans and blame it on Bush.
Med man you are champion slogan chanter, but you ignore the actual events leading to this.
You say it all about the evil greedy corps, and you are somewhat right, but you ignore the leftist that contributed to it just as much.
You betcha..Recently I had to call a gov't sponsored agency..When the menu came up..it was in Spanish, and if you wanted English, it was no.2. No.2!!! WTF.. Last I knew English was the language of record here. Are you sure NAFTA and shipping all our jobs over seas didn't have anything to do with the mortgage crisis? If all the jobs left, how are people getting paid? What jobs are left are filled by illegals. It's really a wonderful thing when you have to be able to speak Spanish in America to be employable.
I think it's a combination of factors, blame can't really be laid on just one area.
Well, obviously you didn't have a factory job in the rust belt. 12 million jobs have been lost since the enactment of Nafta. It did very little good for Americans and a lot more harm, that is if you count job loss as harmful. I saw it as a scam even before it was enacted and that is one thing I disliked about slick Willie. Don't get me wrong, he did a lot for the economy when he was in, but that NAFTA thingy didn't really get rolling untill he was out of office, and then the repukes piled on. Reganomics took hold and we are where we are.I had no problem with the original NAFTA, if you had a factory in the US and you opened another one in canada or mexico you got some breaks. but, if you closed your US factory you were penalized, those rules got changed under Bush...
Hey you young Nazi punk, How's it hanging,~LOL~?ATTABOY!!! If i knew how to give reps I would!!!! Check out his rants(medi) on book reviews... He stats..I ask for facts..he calls me Nazi.. Just dislike being called a Nazi because I don't agree with him, but he's no fun any more..at least give me a bit of credit for a broader vocabulary. My apologies.Such eloquent speakers on this thread. I'm guessing you were all English majors?
What I don't understand is if so many of these laid off workers are so pissed off about losing their jobs, and are so sure they can do better. What's stopping them from putting their money where their mouth is. Surely it wouldn't be that hard for them to find the one's that got laid off and put together $10K each, with 2,000 people that's $20M, see if GM will just lease the factory, and then form a corporation, and start producing.I know of a factory near me that moved to China, I know of another one that moved to Mexico and another that is just empty, not sure where it moved to. That's just within 30 miles of me. I'm sure there are more. I wonder how many jobs those 3 places added up to?
There you go again with pulling figures out of your big fat ass. Let me see some proof if you are going to spew bullshit like the above, What's that you say, you cant, go figure. What I don't understand is if so many of these laid off workers are so pissed off about losing their jobs, and are so sure they can do better. If the unions are so sure that they are not responsible for the collapse of GM then what's stopping them from proving it?
I've heard tales of electricians that got $200K for severance after just 5 years, and other workers that got $100K after 21 years. Seems to me that it's not just CEOs that are getting well rewarded for running companies into the ground.
However, unlike the CEOs, there's enough of those workers to at least try proving that they weren't responsible.
Then there's the UAW itself, which is sitting on Billions...
Billions, surely if they are so sure that they are not responsible they could buy a factory from GM themselves. I'm sure GM would be happy to sell. Or if not GM any number of manufacturers with spare factories lying empty up here...
Or the Mill Workers up in Minnesota. Surely if the Mill was profitable they'd have no problems getting a bank to float them a loan if they all pulled together and came up with 10 - 20% of whatever it'd take to buy that Mill.
Instead the UAW just keeps on whining about how GM, Ford and Chrysler need to be bailed out. P'raps it should be considered that actions do speak louder than words, and from their actions it would seem that the UAW is full of leaches and cowards.
What you mean that the UAW isn't sitting on Billions, surely all those pension accounts could be leveraged... unless they already have been buying those million dollar golf-courses for the union leaders. There you go again with pulling figures out of your big fat ass.
