The Death Penalty

I read a book a while back titled "Innocent Man". It was from John Grisham (pelican brief, the witness etc.) and I think it was his only non-fictional book. It was a true story of a man who was accused of murder, railroaded by the cops and the prosecution and was put on death row only to be released 18 years later with his life (and ass) thoroughly fucked.
There were times while I was reading this book that I had to stop, put it down and take a walk around the block just to cool off, that's how angry it made me. The death penalty never really bothered me because who gives a shit about murderers and rapists but now I agree with most of what everyone else on here seems to be saying. Putting down a thousand murderers and rapists isn't worth the risk of potentially killing an innocent person.

Don't kill the person unless you know he/she is responsible for the crime

Anyone who thinks you can not very easily be found guilty of a murder that you did not commit has no experience with the justice system - it happens all the time. Did you know experiments were done decades ago that showed that eye witness' were wrong 80% of the time? So, why are they still admissible in court? beats me - that's just how the court is. One travesty of justice after the other and everyone goes home like it's just another day at the office.

Most jurors assume that if you are charged with murder, chances are you are guilty. And winning on appeal is a whole other level of improbable. If few guilt people are executed, it is only because so few are sentenced to it.

Like Manson you say. Cant kill him because he didn't kill anyone he brainwashed others to kill people. prison for life and that is what he got
I'm not being a dick, I am simply stating fact. You should try it, its exhilarating.
Charles Milles Manson was sentenced to death, he was found guilty of conspiracy to commit the Tate/LaBianca murders, carried out by members of the group at his instruction. He was convicted of the murders themselves through the joint-responsibility rule, which makes each member of a conspiracy guilty of crimes his fellow conspirators commit in furtherance of the conspiracy's object.
The fact that he is still breathing due to a change in law does not eliminate the sentence.

"Manson was sentenced to death, but that sentence was automatically commuted to life imprisonment when a 1972 court decision briefly eliminated the death penalty in California and canceled all death sentences pending in the state. California's eventual reinstatement of capital punishment was not retroactive; Manson is currently an inmate at Corcoran State Prison."
So what it boils down to is he got lucky and that is the sole reason he's not feeding the worms as we speak.

no one watching them but them

Until they trick you, steal a starship and attempt to take over the universe.

Against it.

I don't think the government should have the authority to execute the citizens - when the government has the ability to end your life at their will, that opens up a whole host of other problems.

It doesn't decrease crime

Innocent people have been executed (check out the movie the Life of David Gale)

It's too expensive

The point is you can't really know for sure. We as generally honest and moral people just expect that others are the same way so when we see a defendant in shackles and some prosecutor is saying "that's definitely the guy" we want to believe it. The reality is that the cops and the prosecution aren't necesarilly looking for the right guy they're looking for ANY guy they can make a case on. There's been murder and rape cases where they have signed confessions, guy gets death penalty, 20 years later with the use of DNA it proves the guy didn't do it. The bottom line is that cops and lawyers will do anything to throw your ass in jail they don't give a shit if you did anything or not it's like a game to them and they play to win.

I am against it also. I believe in personsal property rights. Your right to life is granted from your creator. Our Government has no "right" to take that away unless it is in self defense.

QFT!

Does the name Mike Nyfong ring a bell? Duke La Cross rape case. I have a buddy who can list prosecutors and Judges who are like that by name and site the cases to prove it.

As a fiscal conservative, I would like to eliminate executions at the hands of the state. Instead, once DNA evidence is produced in a child rape/murder case, and a jury finds the perp guilty, just let the father of the victim into the cell of the perp for 30 minutes ... armed with a set of vice grips, a blow torch and a baseball bat. Think of the taxpayer money that would save!

How about making capital punishment voluntary? And immediate.

"do you want to be executed...?"

"...uhh... no thanks..."

"ok, next!... Do you want to be executed...?"

There are things worse than death. I was thinking more along the lines of...

"Do you want to live to be a ripe old age getting cornholed multiple times a day, every day of your life by various two-legged vermin?"

"Not really... fuck it, just shoot me."
