Anti-Sharia demonstrators hold rallies in cities across the country
ACT for America, a lobbyist organization with close ties to the Trump administration that has helped pass state-level bills targeting Islamic law and refugees, organized the protests as a nationwide “March Against Sharia.”
In New York City, the rally started downtown nearly an hour late with a crowd of around three dozen people, some of them in camouflage fatigues and waving American flags. About a dozen wore shirts identifying them as members of the anti-government Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters.
Across the street, separated by police officers and barricades, a few hundred mostly young people — including labor activists, Jewish and Muslim protesters, and left-wing anarchists — blasted air horns and whistles and held banners that read “Fascists out of NYC.”
Hundreds and thousands show up to let them know they are outnumbered and wrong. Portland Oregon made them feel unsafe and they cancelled. Yet the national news treats these small groups of hate speech outcasts as notable. Last week a more virulent group showed up in Portland. About a hundred of them. They faced thousands who oppose hate speech. Unlike in other demonstrations where they went into the opposing crowd for cameo shots of them hitting women, the haters stayed behind police lines protecting them.
The so-called Oath keepers are military and police paramilitary militant groups. One day they will open fire on anti hate speech protesters. To protect "freedom for hate speech". It will not be to protect people speaking out against it.
