Tokeroo's Random Bagseed Grow

Discussion thread here: https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journal-discussion/401712-tokeroos-random-bagseed-grow-discussion.html

This is not my first grow, but due to some events that transpired while I was in the middle of a decent personal grow, our normal guy had an unfortunate visit from the law. So I broke everything down and stashed parts all over my house and property *lol*. Paranoia can be a good thing at times I guess.

Out of the two grows I completed, the first one was a major learning experience and I screwed a lot up. Grew in the attic, in the open in the early spring. Temps were pretty good for it. The beast got to like 4 feet tall and I couldn't wrap my arms around the canopy. I then proceeded to burn half of it up with nutes and a heater that was pointed right at it. I got a few grams off what could have potentially been an oz or more (shitty lighting). Oh and it sucked. My second grow was in a store bought utility cab, I had good circulation, proper temps, but I burned her up a little with nutes. I pulled a half off it in dry weight. Not bad I guess. Better high than what it came from.

So I am working on getting this going again - it's just for me and the wife. We normally do 1/4 to 1/2 a week, but she's prego now so.. I don't need much!

So let's get on with it. My current box was put together this past weekend from some of the parts of my other boxes that I had messed up anyhow cause I was stoned when putting them together :leaf:

Setup:
Box One: 2x2x3'
Box Two: 2x2'
Box Three: 2x2x4 or 2x3x4 (coming in a few weeks)
Grow Medium: MG soil (yeah, I know)
Lighting: CFL. Most are 23w mix of 2700K and 6500K with a few higher powers sprinkled in. Number of lights varies. Starting this journal with 1x23w 2700K, 3x23W 6500K and 1x65watt 2700K
Light Cycle: 24/0, 12/12
Environment: boxes inside attic
Nutes: Veg - Schultz 20-30-20. Flower - Green Light Super Bloom 12-55-6 w/ 0.10% chelated iron (yikes!)

Start Dates:
A2: seedling transplanted 12/5/2010. Think they sprouted maybe 2-3 weeks prior.
B1 and B2: Germmed on 12/17 and planted 12/22
C1: Germmed on 12/17 and planted on 12/22

When I started doing this again about a month and a half ago, I just threw some germinated seeds into soil and then transplanted a few. Of those, only one remains and its name right now is "A2".

Of the seeds I started about 3-4 weeks after, three remain - B1, B2 and C1.

These are all from random bags we have had in the past. The letters designate which "batch" they came from. As came from some seeds I had not bagged up yet, Bs came from an "unknown" mix and Cs come from a bag named "Willy". Willy was the last batch we had from our dude before things went nuts.

Due to the horrible conditions I was growing in (attic, no climate control) and the fact my area got hit by one of those snow storms that swept through the south/east portion of the US, it was rather cold.

All of the As were grown like that. A1 is still alive, but outside the box with no light. I am going to kill it. A3-A5 were all burnt up by a heater I had cut up too high when I tried to keep them warm.

The current B and C batch had a few harsh days, but the temps came back up slightly so they were growing at around 50 degrees.

Now, everything is in my box, with a small ceramic heater. I have a thermometer in there finally and the temp is currently sitting around 71 degrees. I am slowly cutting the heater up until the temp stabilizes around 75.

Since the cabinets are so short, I am trying LST for the first time with the Bs and Cs. Everything is kind of ghetto right now, so I am using bread ties and skewers as my constraints.

The Bs came up really short and bushy. So leafy they made me think of lettuce.

A2 I cut way back as it had grown too tall. So it's back to 4 main branches in the pic below, but the longest one I chopped as well. This plant has been regulated to the "experiment" bin. This will allow me to personally observe how growth hormones are redistributed and how cutting can effect the growth and overall health of the plant. It's one thing to read about something, it's another to do it and see it happen.

I am going to switch to the Make It Rain technique for watering here soon.

Anyhow, on to the pics! If you have read this far, thank you :)

Pic 1: A2 after cutting it back. I also ended up chopping that longer branch

one thing I have noticed, is almost every plant I have grown with this soil, save for B1 and B2 above, have started yellowing on the first few sets of leaves. This plagued me in my completed grows as well. From what I can find, it looked like Mg def, but I am hearing other people having this issue sometimes with MG soil. I have two bags of crap soil ($3/bag) in the shed. Maybe I will use that next time.

Thanks NWG :)

Asked wife to check the temp for me while I was workin and it was up to 88 degrees. Air temp here was a little warmer than usual (50s). I am thinking I have to step up the timing on building some light traps for the fans. I am hoping that this will allow me to redirect where the intake is blowing to.

Or, it may just be better to add a small fan to the environment for a little circulation.

Temp is down to 84 and should drop tonight to the 70s and stabilize there. I am hoping I can at least get a little fan in there tonight.

If I were you I would go with FFOF soil bro! It isn't that expensive and self PH's to 7.0. I have seen to many people going with "cheap" soil and they pay for it later when their plants have troubles. JMHO GL on the grow though bro!

Yeah I'm sorta in the same boat. I gotta get a new job but until then I'm gonna do some small time stuff just to get a feel for it.

Yeah man, there is so much I wish I could go ahead and purchase so I can work more on the cabs and such.

Alright, last night's update - I added a few lights to the cab and rearranged them some. It's now a bit cleaner, but I still need to get a floor on this thing, joints sealed and the thing painted. I only have every-other weekend to work on major improvements though, as that's when my step daughter is with her father.

I "Made It Rain" for B2 and C1. People say to flush with 3x the container size. Containers are 8" pots, I am assuming approx 1 gallon? Well, they are only about 1/2 - 3/4 full and I flushed each with a gallon. Bad? Good?

In the pics below, you can see some seeds I was germinating from another batch. I am calling these the "D batch", and they came from a bag I had labeled "Quickie" (quick up high, then nothing). Only D1 and D2 were showing tap roots. I will hopefully see roots from the other two tonight.

Notes: Ladybugs are starting to find their way into the environment from outside.

Alright, pics in order:
Pic 1: D Batch seeds
Pic 2: B2 after I made it rain
Pic 3: C1 after I made it rain
Pic 4: Box One. It needs some work. That huge light is in line with the others - but it's a 300w equiv 65 watter. 4200 lumens.

Wife took the kid out for a bit, so I had a little time. This is nearing completion - box two - it's a 2x2x2 cube.

Started germming 4 more of the "B" batch. The other two from the "D" batch haven't really progressed. The tap is poking through one, so I am going to give them another day or so.

I think right now I am going to use Box Two as my starter box - my only problem is going to be the temps. It's bad enough I have a 1500 watt heater in Box One :(

I also ordered some Jock Horror and some Bubblelicious from Nirvana today.

Not sure when I will start those, but that'll be another thread :)

Checked the temp this morning in Box One. It's sitting at around 74. Not bad considering the ambient temp outside the box is around 35. We are supposed to be getting hit by some more cold this weekend, with temps going into the teens.

Does *anyone* have advice for keeping temps up in Box Two, which has no heater? It's not sealed tight either yet, so that's a bit of a problem. I only have two CFLs in it atm, but I am planning on adding 4 or so more for now. That will help a little, and I suppose I could add a 60w incandescent for heat, but I am already running a lot of power through my one power tap in the attic :(

Grow is looking good ! I to have used mg and had the same results, problem being you shouldnt use any nutes before 3 weeks of growth or ...
well you know ,mine survived but were very small in the end , that was my first grow, now i use CHEAP mushroom dirt ,perlite, vermiculite(or sand),blood meal and bone meal mix ,but start with plain peatfor first weeks(cheap to get),do you use peat pellets when seeds spout? its a good idea to,and use a clear plastic cover for 2 weeks or till the big(cover like a geranium for to keep high humidity) you can make your own soil cheaply.may be 20$ or so at home depot for the vermiculite and perlight and bone, blood meal.the mushroom dirt is 2$ a bag,all this will last multiple grows!!I grow only cfl

MG can do that to the first set of leaves. When I transplant, I add a little perlite to the hole. I also don't nute mine until flower at which time I alternate molasses and schultz african violet. I usually get several zips from each plant.

Looks nice! Thanks for stopping in and posting :) I have two bags of plain dirt that I picked up last year. I am going to have get one of them inside for the babies. I will try that with the next "B" batch that is germming now.

As for the boxes, no I cannot stack them, at least not until I get a floor added to Box One. Right now I am using what little plywood is laid in the attic as a floor. Next weekend I should be adding a floor to it, and maybe building Box Three.

I have seen this from plants that are past three weeks also, but I admit - not as frequently. I am assuming the MG is causing some nute burn to the seedlings? But yeah, will try some non-MG dirt for this next batch (and my JH and Bubblelicious when those come in).

thanks guys! I will post some more pics once the fam is awake and I can get into the attic.

I am finding it hard to keep the temperature stable in Box One. It has fluctuated mainly between 62 and 74, but it did have a spike up to 96 at one point before I cut the heater down.

I followed up the recent "Rain" on B2 and C1 with a light dose of nutes. I am hoping this will help correct the yellowing and spotting I am seeing (pics). I have to say, it's a little funny they started yellowing after I "Made It Rain".

Soil pH is right on, about 6.7-6.8. I have seen very little, if any, growth from anything in the last week, at least.

D1 and D2 have barely sprouted. Don't think they like the temps in Box Two. I have added a 60w incandescent for warmth and filled a few light leaks around the door with weather stripping. A few more to go, however.

I planted BB1, BB2 and BB3. I used some cheap regular dirt (and boy does it look like crap dirt) that I had an extra bag of, and lightly watered. They are in Box Two with the other sprouts.

I need to pick up maybe two more light sockets and a few more y-adapters and I should be set for now. I think I may pass on Box Three for the moment.

Was able to get a floor added to Box One. This is now going to be the flower box. I have moved B2 and C1 into to start the flowering process. I have the space heater in this box to help keep temps up when the lights are off. Why flower them? They have been vegging for about 4 weeks now, and they are bagseed. I have the good stuff coming (I hope). I want to get something started so we can start self supplying that much sooner :)

In the veg box (Box Two) I now have just B1 and the seedlings. D2 has officially sprouted.

Here is my light setup now

Box One (flower) - 3'x2'x2' (LxWxH)
4 x 26w 1700 lumen soft white bulbs - 6800 lumens
2 x 42w 2600 lumen soft white bulbs - 5200 lumens
1 x 65w 4200 lumen soft white bulb - 4200 lumens
Total Lumens: 16200

Box Two (veg) - 2'x2'x2'
8 x 26w 1600 lumen daylight bulbs - 12800 lumens
Total Lumens: 12800
